Shopping at the KaDeWe or the Kaufhaus des Westens, Berlin

Where could you find a big shopping centre in Berlin? The KaDeWe is an ideal location near the U-bahn metro station of Wittenbergplatz. We went rather quickly through this department store but if you are into shopping, you could spend a lot of time and money here. The KaDeWe which opened 105 years ago is not only one of the oldest but also with 60.000 m² the biggest department store of the Europe outside the UK.

You find here all the famous brands and the decorations in the entrance are glamorous. The blossoms of the trees represent the pleasant aromas of the exclusive perfume stands in this area. On several floors however, you see that also here in Germany the financial crisis has hit. Some of the stands are empty and refurbishment is ongoing. We were the most impressed with the food department. Just look at these porcelain tea pots, the enormous variety of meat, fresh fish sandwiches, shell fish, prepared fish starters or pate, cheese, caviar…. This must be the Walhalla for gourmet lovers.

  2. Shopping is not really our thing either, but it is always fascinating to see these places and they do offer some great photographic opportunities, as you have proved today.

  5. Very impressive interior. It is harder to find an actual bookstore here since most people buy online. Are those fish sandwiches with skin? I have never seen it made like that before.

Groetjes, Dietmut
