Cuddling a big hot painted pipe in Fairbanks, Alaska

Walking in the historic town of Fairbanks we encountered a pipe sticking out of the ground. It showed a painted image of a dog. We thought it was a ventilation of a kitchen. A bit further we saw another one but bigger and we started realising this is something larger than kitchen ventilation.

Fairbanks is full of these kind of pipes and they are all painted displaying flowers, animals and local sceneries. Is this the ventilation of a metro line? No, there is no metro in Fairbanks, it is too small. We asked one of the locals and she informed us these pipes are a ventilation system of a coal plant close to the historic part of town. It supports the escape of hot steam out of the soil and the underground network of pipes. During the winter when it is freezing minus fifty degrees cuddling a large hot pipe must be a relief.

  4. It's a good idea to paint them as otherwise they would look rather ungainly.

Even opwarmen. Groetjes Dietmut
