Spotting Green Monkeys in the wilderness of Barbados

High screams and animals jumping between the trees draws your attention. At first we only saw one or two monkeys but we soon realised there was a larger group. They were jumping from tree to tree, playing and fighting with each other. They weigh about 4 to 8 kg and can be 50cm tall.

Green Monkeys were imported from Senegal during the 17th century. They came from Africa on slave ships and are now widely spread over the island of Barbados. Some of the males have a beautiful yellow green beard and neck.

Most of the action happened high above in the trees. Luckily, I brought my 600mm lens and took a few 100 pictures in half an hour. First using a tripod but after a few minutes changing to holding the camera in hand and shooting fast picture series. Below you see the best. It was not easy because of the distance and speed of these playing animals. I am however very pleased with the results.
