Hard Rock Cafe Berlin with a Stone Berlin Wall guitar

Not so long ago, we wrote about the Hard Rock Cafe in Miami. Here in Berlin, we see a similar concept but some of the items talk to the imagination. Before entering the restaurant, you pass alongside the Rock Shop, many people collect Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts and we still have one from Bangkok and San Francisco. After a while we decided to stop buying them.

The cafe has a nice bar and next to the staircase, a real car lays on its side. Time to pose for a picture. There are some really interesting collector items in this restaurant, a dress from Mariah Carey, guitars from Bon Jovi and Lenny Kravitz, and a bra from Annie Lennox. For us the most interesting item was the Berlin Wall stone guitar. It is part of the history of this city. We enjoyed our hamburger and sandwich and went on with our city exploration.

Onlangs schreven we nog over het Hard Rock Cafe in Miami. Hier in Berlijn zien we een gelijkaardig concept en vele stukken uit hun verzameling spreken tot de verbeelding. Vooraleer het restaurant binnen te gaan, loop je langs de Rock Shop, vele mensen verzamelen Hard Rock T-shirts en wij hebben er ook een van Bangkok en San Francisco. Na een tijdje besloten we ze niet meer aan te kopen. 

Het Cafe heeft een mooie bar en naast de trap ligt een echte auto op zijn kant, dit leek ons een mooie plaats voor een fotomoment. Er hangen hier enkele unieke verzamelstukken in dit restaurant: een jurk van Mariah Carey, gitaren van Bon Jovi en Lenny Kravitz, en een BH van Annie Lennox. Het meest interessante item was voor ons een gitaar gesneden uit een stuk steen van de Berlijnse Muur. Het maakt deel uit van de geschiedenis van deze stad. We genoten van onze hamburger en sandwich en gingen daarna verder met onze stadsontdekking..

The most famous part of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie

The Berlin Wall that divided East and West Berlin was built in 1961 and fell in 1989. Checkpoint Charlie is so famous because it was the only place where people could cross the border to the DDR. Berlin was divided in two and familes were separated.

The checkpoint is located at the Friedrichstrasse 43, where the Americans stood guard, you now have the posibility to take your picture with people dressed in army clothing of that are. On a big picture above the checkpoint you see a young Russian soldier. The warning signs make a big impression, you are leaving the American sector. What it doesn't say is, you are entering the DDR controlled by the Russian communists and it could be that you will never return.

At the checkpoint there is also a museum about the cold war and the Berlin Wall. Just look at the black and white picture of cars driving through the neutral zone. In the eighties, my father had to go often to the DDR for his work as Sales Manager. He flew to Berlin and than crossed the border via Checkpoint Charlie. Entering the DDR was always a stressful experience, returning into West Berlin, a relief. About 200 people who tried to cross at this point were shot death.

De Berlijnse Muur werd gebouwd in 1961 en afgebroken in 1989. Hij verdeelde West en Oost Berlijn in twee als fysieke grens. Checkpoint Charlie is zo beroemd omdat deze plaats de enige passage was van West Berlijn naar de DDR. Berlijn alsook vele families waren van elkaar gescheiden. 

De controlepost is gelegen aan de Friedrichstrasse 43, waar de Amerikanen op wacht stonden. Nu heb je er de mogelijkheid om als toerist foto's te nemen met mensen in militaire kledij uit die tijd. Boven het wachthuisje prijkt een foto van een jonge Russische soldaat. Het waarschuwingsbord maakt een grote indruk. Opgelet! Je gaat de Amerikaanse sector verlaten. Wat het niet zegt maar velen dachten, je gaat de DDR binnen, gecontroleerd door de Russische communisten en het zou kunnen dat je nooit meer terug komt. 

Hier vind je ook een museum over de Berlijnse Muur en de Koude Oorlog. Kijk eens naar die zwart wit foto van auto's die door het niemandsland rijden. In de jaren tachtig moest mijn vader regelmatig naar de DDR reizen in zijn rol als Sales Manager. Hij vloog naar Berlijn en stak aan Checkpoint Charlie de grens over. De DDR binnen gaan was altijd stressvol, terug aankomen in West Berlijn, een opluchting. Ongeveer 200 mensen werden aan deze grenspost doodgeschoten..

East Side Gallery, the largest remaining part of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 during the cold war, to separate West Berlin from the communist East Germany and East Berlin occupied by the Russians. The Wall was about 160km long. A drama for the people who had relatives on the other side of Berlin. The symbolic fall of the Wall was in 1990 with the unification of East and West Germany. In the next year the Wall was demolished except for a few remaining pieces to remember what happened here. The largest part of the remaining Wall is the East Side Gallery, it is painted with pieces of Art and graffiti. If you want to visit it you can walk from the “Ostbahnhof” to the “Warshauerstrasse”. The East Side Gallery is located at the Mühlenstrasse between the two metro stations. It is well worth it but go there in the late morning or early afternoon when there are more tourists and people passing by. We do not recommend you to go in the evening, it doesn’t look safe.

In die tijd werd Oost Berlijn bezet door de Russen. De Muur was ongeveer 160km lang. Een drama voor mensen die familie hadden aan de andere kant van Berlijn. De symbolische val van de Muur had plaats in 1990 met de hereniging van Oost en West Duitsland. In het volgende jaar werd de Muur bijna volledig afgebroken. Er blijven slechts enkele stukjes over als herdenkingsmonument behalve de East Side Gallery. Dit stuk van de Muur beschilderd met kunst en graffiti is het groots met zijn 1,2 km lengte. Als je deze wil bezoeken, kan je best wandelen van het “Ostbahnhof” naar de “Warshauerstrasse”. De East Side Gallery is gelegen op de Mühlenstrasse tussen de twee metrostations. Het is een bezoekje waard maar ga tussen 10 en 16 uur wanneer er veel toeristen en voetgangers langskomen. We raden je aan hier ’s avonds weg te blijven, het lijkt ons niet veilig..
