The old town of Stockholm, Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is the oldest part of Stockholm and finds it origin in the 13th century. It is a nice district to walk through with all its coloured historical houses. Some streets are so narrow that you can touch both houses at the same time on each site of the street. Next to some churches, Gamla Stan has many cosy shops and café’s.

Gamla Stan is het oudste stadsgedeelte van Stockholm en werd opgericht gedurende de 13de eeuw. Het is een mooie wijk om door te wandelen met al zijn gekleurde huisgevels. Sommige straten zijn zo smal dat je tegelijkertijd de huizen aan beide kanten van de straat kan aanraken. Naast enkele kerken heeft Gamla Stan een groot aanbod aan gezellige winkeltjes en cafés..

Storkyrkan or the Stockholm Cathedral with its ebony altar

Close to the Royal Palace at the edge of Gamla Stan, you find the Stockholm Cathedral Storkyrkan. Like in many Stockholm churches, you need to pay an entrance fee but this was worth it. The walls and arches are in a type of brick stone and this is very rare. The impressive sculpture of St. George and the Dragon dates from 1489. It tells the story of St. George who defeated the dragon of Selene that received human offers in return of not destroying the village. The day that the princess was offered, St. George killed the dragon. For me the ebony altar with silver elements was the most fascinating piece of art in the church.

Dicht bij het Koninklijk Paleis en aan de rand van Gamla Stan, vind je Storkyrkan de Kathedraal van Stockholm. Zoals in vele Stockholmse kerken moet je inkom betalen maar het was het wel waard. De muren en sierbogen zijn in de zeldzame baksteen. Het indrukwekkende standbeeld van St. George en de draak dateert van 1489. Het verteld het verhaal van St. George die de draak van Selene verslaat. De draak eiste mensenoffers in ruil voor het niet vernietigen van het dorp. De dag dat de prinses werd geofferd doodde St. George de draak. Voor mij was het zwart houten altaar met zilveren elementen het meest fascinerende kunstwerk in de kerk..

The German Church or Tyska Kyrkan in Stockholm

Stockholm is an amazing city. We are walking through the narrow streets of the old town of Gamla Stan when we see the high tower of the Tyska Kyrkan church. Originally this was a big merchant house but became a church during the 17th century. It is a Baroque church with many wooden elements and a Royal lounge, something we have never seen before. For us the most wonderful elements of this church are the stained glass pieces of art.

Stockholm is een ongelooflijk mooie stad. We wandelen door de smalle straatjes van Gamla Stan, de oude stad, en zien de hoge toren van de Tyska Kyrkan kerk. Oorspronkelijk was dit een koopliedenhuis maar het werd een kerk gedurende de 17de eeuw. Deze Barokkerk met vele houten elementen heeft ook een Koninklijke Loge, iets wat we nog nooit eerder zagen. Voor ons is het meest aantrekkelijke van de Tyska Kyrkan de brandglazen kunstwerken..

General Impressions of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden

The first question we asked ourselves was how to explore Stockholm? We are sportive, so walking long distances in a big city is not a problem; it is also the best way to see the most. An alternative could be a Hop-On-Hop-Off tour bus or boat, because Stockholm is a collection of islands. On the first picture you see a panoramic view of Gamla Stan. Stockholm like many Scandinavian capitals has an Amusement Park, from the bay you hear and see the roller coasters riding. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time to visit it, we prefered a more cultural program. Between the islands it is very busy with all the steam boats and water taxis. The city has plenty historical and beautiful buildings. We were lucky it didn’t rain until the end of the day.

Hoe kan je best Stockholm bezoeken? Wij zijn sportief en hebben geen probleem met het wandelen van lange afstanden in een grootstad, dit is ook de beste manier om zo veel mogelijk te zien. Een alternatief kan een Hop-On-Hop-Off bus of boot zijn, want Stockholm is een verzameling van eilandjes. Op de eerste foto zie je een panorama van Galma Stan. Stockholm zoals vele andere Scandinavische hoofdsteden heeft een pretpark, van in de baai zie je en hoor je de achtbanen rijden. Spijtig genoeg hadden we hier niet genoeg tijd voor en kozen we voor meer culturele uitstappen. Tussen de eilandjes is het zeer druk varen met stoomboten en watertaxi's. De stad heeft een groot aanbod historische en mooie gebouwen. We waren blij dat het enkel begon te regenen op het einde van de dag..
