Birds and Iguanas at Gardner Bay, Espanola Island

Wildlife in the Galapagos is exceptional. During each hike we are amazed of the beauty and fearlessness of the animals. They have no human enemies here and the islands are protected against high volume tourism. Land visits are not permitted without license and guide.

On this fabulous beach of Gardner Bay we saw some birds and fresh tracks of a giant tortoise who laid her eggs in the sand. Just look at the prints in the sand with the sea and sun in the background.

A bit further we find large groups of iguanas. They all have grey, black and red colors. We particularly like our picture of the iguana on the green seaweed rocks.

De dieren op de Galapagos eilanden zijn exceptioneel. Tijdens elke wandeling zijn we verbaasd van de schoonheid en angstloosheid van de dieren. Zij hebben hier geen menselijke vijanden en de eilanden zijn beschermd tegen massa toerisme. Zonder vergunning en gids is dit verboden terrein.

Op het prachtige strand van Gardner Bay zagen we enkele vogels en de verse sporen van een reuze schildpad die haar eieren in het zand begraven had. Kijk eens naar de afdrukken in het zand met de zee en zon op de achtergrond. 

Iets verder zien we grote groepen leguanen. Ze hebben zwarte, grijze en rode kleuren op hun huid. In het bijzonder vinden we de foto met de leguaan op de groene zeewier rotsen heel leuk.

Swimming iguanas at Espinoza Point, Galapagos

Espinoza Point is a combination of lava, trees, cactuses and clear shallow waters. Just looking down into the water, you see fish swimming and occasionally also sea iguanas. They move fast with their head and spiked back above the water line.

Once on land, you need to be careful not to trip over the sea iguanas. They are almost stacked on top of each other, with hundreds together. You also see turtles, crab and amazing birds.

Espinoza Point is een combinatie van lavagrond, bomen, cactussen en ondiep helder water. Als je neer kijkt, zie je vissen zwemmen en ook af en toe ook zeehagedissen. Ze zwemmen snel, met hun kop en stekelige rug boven de waterlijn. 

Eens op het droge moet je oppassen niet te struikelen over de zeehagedissen. Ze liggen hier gewoon opgestapeld met honderden tegelijk. Je ziet er ook schildpadden, krabben en mooie vogels.

Iguanas and lizards at Punta Suarez, Espanola Island, Galapagos

We arrived on the beach with a zodiac boat of the Celebrity Expedition. We were warned to be careful of the iguanas, they are so numerous that it is difficult not to step or fall over one. Some of them are almost two meters long. They all lay silent on rocks, in the sand or on top of each other.

With my big lens, it is easier to take sharp pictures, especially of the lizards which are a lot smaller. We saw some yellow colored species and lizards with red heads.

We kwamen aan op het strand met een zodiac boot van de Celebrity Expedition. We werden gewaarschuwd op te letten voor de leguanen, ze zijn zo talrijk dat het moeilijk is niet op hen te trappen of er over te vallen. Sommigen zijn bijna twee meter lang. Ze liggen stil op de rotsen, in het zand of op elkaar. 

Met onze grote lens is het eenvoudiger scherpe foto’s te maken, in het bijzonder van de hagedissen die heel wat kleiner zijn. We zagen enkele gele exemplaren met een rode nek en kop.

Urbina Bay dry and wet hiking, Punta Morena, Galapagos

In the afternoon, we are going for a hike in Urbina Bay of Punta Morena Island. This is partially a wet hike which entails that some areas you need to cross are under water because of the tide. It is good to be prepared and have shoes which are both suitable on sand, rocks and in the water. At certain moments we were up to our knees in the water. Fun.

It all started with a wet landing from the zodiac boat. On our beach walk we saw some shells and thousands of crabs hanging on the rocks. Leave nothing else than your footprints. Pelicans are sitting high in the trees.

Making our way into the forest we see a thousand year old grey coral on land. It was enormous but looked very fragile. Between the leaves there is a large tortoise. The most beautiful animal we saw on this hike was a two meter long yellow land iguana. He was just perfect.

In de namiddag, gaan we wandelen in Urbina Bay op het Punta Morena eiland. Het is een gedeeltelijk natte wandeling, wat inhoud dat sommige gebieden waar je door moet, onder water staan door de getijden. Zorg er voor dat je goed voorbereid bent met schoenen die zowel geschikt zijn op rotsen, zand en in het water. Op een bepaald moment stonden we tot aan onze knieën in het water. Leuk.

Het begon allemaal met een natte Zodiac landing. Op het strand gedeelte zagen we schelpen en duizenden krabben die tegen de rotsen klommen. Hoog in de bomen zaten pelikanen. Laat niets achter in dit ecosysteem behalve je voetafdrukken. 

Toen we aan de rand van het bos aankwamen zagen we een, meer als duizend jaar oude grijze koraal, op het land. Het was enorm groot maar leek wel kwetsbaar. Tussen de bomen kroop een landschildpad. Het mooiste dier dat we echter op de wandeling ontdekten was een gele landleguaan van ongeveer twee meter lang. Hij was gewoon perfect.
