Tessa and the birds, Zoetermeer

It has been a while since we published some pictures of our Golden Retriever Tessa so today this is going to change. While Kristel goes for a walk with Tessa, I am trying to take some bird pictures with my tele lens. The pictures of Tessa were easy, the birds more difficult.

It was possible to take pictures of three different birds that afternoon: a crow, a coot and a magpie. The coot was posing on the water but the other two couldn't sit still. It was a challenge.

The port of Rotterdam and modern impressions

The beating heart of Rotterdam is its port. It is one of the most important industrial ports in the world and responsible for the blooming economy of the city. Here you find the largest containerships ever built, dry docks for ship repair, oil refineries and the occasional cruise ship. We start our discovery boat trip at the Erasmusbrug.

After taking a picture of the Rotterdam skyline with the Euromast, we enter deeper into the port. We pass by tall cranes which automatically load and unload containers. The "CMA CGM Marseille" is fueling and loading. Looking at the small rescue boat hanging at the back, I wouldn't like to be launched into the water via this. On our return we see the retired cruise ship SS Rotterdam of the Holland America Line. It is now used as a hotel.

Around the old port we took take a few nice pictures of a red light boat, a green Jacuzzi boat with cold beer, the famous cube houses, a church and modern architecture. Exploring the port, Leuvehaven and the city centre of Rotterdam is fun.

Markthal of Rotterdam, world class modern architecture

The city of Rotterdam is the high rise capital of The Netherlands and keeps on investing to put its stamp on the world tourist map. In 2015, it was recognised as one of the most attractive cities in Europe. One of the latest architectural art pieces is the "Markthal" or market hall, an investment of almost 200 million euro.

The modern Markthal has been built in a U-shape form. On the side and top of the U-shape they created apartments. People who live here have a window inside their apartment looking down on the market.

Inside the markhal, looking up to the ceiling you see these windows but more importantly, you are flabbergasted by the enormous colorful paintings of fruit, vegetables and fish. Looking down you see the rolling staircases and back to the exit, a glass wall, intensifying the views of modern Rotterdam.

In the Markthal you can buy quality products: meat, nuts, fruit, vegetables, fish, cheese, Dutch syrup waffles, donuts, chocolate, herbs and spices. The most interesting experience is that some of the merchants also have a roof terrace where you can taste dishes with their ingredients. We tried some Pinchos with wine and the girls loved it. Cheers.

Proost.

Chinese and Western fusion in Restaurant HanTing, The Hague

We heard so much about this upcoming restaurant in The Hague that we had to try it. It received a Michelin Star and is highly praised in the GaultMillau, SpecialBite, Lekker and Iens. Chef Han is a real artist in the dish presentation, combining ingredients and bringing taste into your plate. During our first visit we were together with a colleague who has serious allergies. All dishes of the menu were prepared a la minute and adjusted taking into account her allergies. An excellent job and really praiseworthy. We were very pleased with the food and the wine was acceptable. It was top and we had to come back with some of our culinary friends.

However, our second visit was a disappointment. The scallops were very good so still our compliments for the starter. The tuna meat was of very poorer quality so it weakened the second course. For our main course, we selected the Wagyu Beef. We were expecting the pure meat of this top meat breed from Japan. Unfortunately the Chef completely had cutt it in very thin slices and covering it with a very spicy sauce. We could not even taste the meat anymore. We discussed this preparation with Chef Han and have to accept we know very little of the Chinese cuisine. What in our culture seems out of balance is not always so for others. We need to conclude that these more traditional dishes are a bridge to far for us. You need to form your own opinion.
