The Petri or Saint Peter’s church in Rostock

You could already say that the Petri church located at the harbour of Rostock is an old church; it was built in the 13th century. Its high tower is pointed at the sea and is an orientation point for ships approaching the city of Rostock. In the church you find several wooden ships that hang on the ceiling. They are a symbol of the protection of all the fishermen on the sea and for a save return. It seems this is a recurring custom in Northern European harbour cities. The corridor to the church tower looked very old and Kristel had to take a look.

Je kan al concluderen dat de Petri kerk gelegen aan de haven van Rostock een oude kerk is, ze werd gebouwd gedurende de 13de eeuw. Haar hoge toren wijst in de richting van de zee en is een oriëntatiepunt voor schepen die de haven van Rostock binnenvaren. In de kerk vind je verschillende houten scheepsmodellen die aan het plafond hangen. Een symbool voor de bescherming van vissers en een veilige terugkeer aan wal. Dit lijkt een veel voorkomend gebruik in Noord Europese havensteden. De gang naar de kerktoren leek zeer oud en Kristel kon haar niet bedwingen om eens te gaan kijken..
