Restaurant il Francescano, Piazza Santa Croce, Florence

Even when you travel and want to make the most of your trip, one has to eat. Being in Florence we decided to try a typical local restaurant recommended by a travel guide. On the window we saw that restaurant Francescano had also received four out of five points on tripadvisor.

We knew the day menu was a good choice with local specialties so that's what we ordered with a glass of Tuscan wine. As starter we shared a large platter of antipasto, than two tasters of pasta and fresh fruit. It was very good and not expensive. We are now ready to continue our Florence discovery.

Zelf als je op reis bent en je wil het meeste maken van je dag, moet je af en toe toch iets eten. In Florence besloten we dan ook een typisch lokaal restaurant aanbevolen door een gids uit te proberen. Aan het venster zagen we dat restaurant Francescano ook vier punten op vijf had gekregen op Tripadvisor. 

Het restaurant bood een menu aan met specialiteiten uit de streek. Dit was echt iets naar onze tand en samen met een glas Toscaanse wijn ideaal. We begonnen met een grote schotel antipasti, dan twee proeverijen van pasta en vers fruit. Het was heel goed en niet duur. We zijn nu klaar de ontdekking van Florence verder te zetten.

Piazza Santa Croce and the cathedral, Florence

There were many people on the Piazza Santa Croce. Most of them were admiring the beautiful houses and the cathedral. Just like In Venice, the square is populated by large groups of pigeons. Visitors attract them with food to take family pictures. We enjoyed a glass of red Italian wine from the region on one of the terraces.

The cathedral has a very interesting neo gothic facade. On the first church picture, you could not tell the church is so high but once you stand at the entrance door, it becomes clear. The marble and wood sculptures are fine pieces of art. On the roof top, two angels are holding a wooden cross, a nice sight against the blue sky background. The Santa Croce cathedral contains the graves of the world famous Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo Galilee. Er waren veel bezoekers op de Piazza Santa Croce.

De meeste waren de mooie huizen en kathedraal aan het bewonderen. Net zoals in Venetië wordt het plein bewoont door grote groepen duiven. Toeristen lokken ze met voedsel om familiefoto's te maken. Wij genoten van een glaasje Italiaanse rode wijn op een terras. 

De kathedraal heeft een heel interessante neogotische gevel. Op de eerste kerkfoto kan je niet inschatten hoe hoog de kerk is maar als je aan de ingangspoort staat wordt alles duidelijk. De marmeren beelden en houten snijwerken zijn fijne kunstschatten. Op het dak houden twee engelen een houten kruis recht, een leuke foto met de blauwe achtergrond. De Santa Croce kathedraal huist de graven van de wereldberoemde Machiavelli, Michelangelo en Galileo Galilei..
