The Pier of Blankenberge, a monument surviving all storms

Each person who has visited the Belgian coast town Blankenberge has seen the pier. It has been there forever and is a real monument. At the entrance you walk under a metal arch and are confronted with a modern piece of art, probably representing sea rocks.

The pier itself needs maintenance which is probably expensive. In Scheveningen they also have such a pier and it is considered so expensive that the Dutch town wants remove it.

But let us go back to Blankenberge. Here you can still on the pier and around the building at the end. You have great views over the sea and beach. The apartment blocks on the coast line show how popular Blankenberge is. In the building there in an interactive exhibition called Storms.

Iedereen die Blankenberge ooit heeft bezocht heeft deze pier gezien. Ze is er reeds zolang ik mij herinner, een echt monument. Aan de inkom loop je onder een metalen sierboog en wordt je geconfronteerd met een modern kunstwerk die waarschijnlijk zeerotsen voorstellen.

De pier zelf heeft dringend onderhoud nodig maar dit is waarschijnlijk heel duur. In Scheveningen heeft men een soortgelijke pier die is zo duur in onderhoud is dat de Nederlanders overwegen ze af te breken. 

Maar laat ons terug keren naar Blankenberge. Hier kan men nog op de volledige pier wandelen. Het zicht over de zee en het strand is heel spectaculair. Een rij appartementsblokken toont aan hoe populair deze Belgische kuststad wel is. In het gebouw op het einde van de pier wordt een interactieve wetenschappelijke tentoonstelling gehouden die Storms heet.

General impressions of Blankenberge, the most popular beach town of Belgium

Blankenberge is known as the beach town for the common man. Some say it is nothing compared to Knokke, the beach location for the rich and famous. We do not agree. Blankenberge has so much entertainment to offer that we would not even consider Knokke.

On the wide sandy beach they have clubs that offer music, snacks and drinks. There is the historical pier, a harbour, an arcade palace, a small carnival fair, sport facilities, an old veledrome and a race track for go-karts. While walking in the city you discover houses with fabulous facades. Unfortunately most of these houses are replaced by high rise apartment buildings.

Kristel looks around in the shops while others eat a hamburger in the American snack bar. At the casino bronze child statues climb the tower. A special sight and it is also strange because children are not allowed inside the casino.

When you like music, go to the White Horse (Het Witte Paard) for an evening of music and cabaret. There are also a few high quality theatres in town. It is certainly something else than the three Scottish men in kilts we saw playing on a bagpipe in the street. Which was also fun.

Blankenberge staat gekend als de badplaats voor de gewone man. Sommigen vinden dit niets in vergelijking met Knokke, de kuststad voor de rijken. Wij zijn hier niet mee akkoord. Blankenberge heeft zoveel te bieden dat we zelfs Knokke niet overwegen.

Op de brede zandstranden staan er clubs die muziek, drankjes en snacks verkopen. Blankenberge heeft een historische pier, een haven, lunaparken, een kleine kermis, sport faciliteiten, een oude velodrome en de racebaan voor go-karts. Tijdens een wandeling ontdek je huizen met ongelooflijke gevels. Spijtig genoeg worden deze huizen regelmatig vervangen door hoogbouw met appartementen.

Kristel neust wat rond in de winkeltjes terwijl anderen een hamburger eten aan een Amerikaanse bar. Op de toren van het Casino klimmen bronzen kinderen naar boven. Een speciaal zicht en ook heel raar want kinderen worden niet toegelaten in het casino. 

Als je van muziek en show houdt, kan je terecht in het Witte Paard, ambiance verzekerd. Er zijn ook enkele toneelhuizen van hoge kwaliteit. Het is eens iets anders dan de drie Schotten in kilt die op hun doedelzak spelen op straat. Begrijp me niet verkeerd dat is ook leuk en bewonderenswaardig.
