The “Monnikendam” and a park called “Plantsoen op de Stadswal”, Amersfoort

The 600 year old city wall crossed a canal where they built a bridge called the “Monnikendam”. It is not a normal bridge but a gate which could block the water way. It was a defence line for the inner city but could also adjust the water level in the canals. It is amazing what the Dutch already did with water constructions around the year 1400. Alongside the wall and the city ring, you now find a beautiful park called “Plantsoen op de Stadswal”. It was here that hundreds of years ago the rich people had their villas. We just enjoyed the flowers, art and walking across small bridges in a green environment.

De meer als 600 jaar oude stadsmuur werd overbrugd aan een brede gracht, men noemde het de “Monnikendam”. Het is geen normale brug maar een waterpoort die de toegang tot de stad via de gracht kon afsluiten. Het had een verdedigingsfunctie maar kon ook het waterniveau in de binnenstad regelen. Het is toch verbazingwekkend welke water gerelateerde bouwwerken de Nederlanders reeds konden bouwen rond het jaar 1400. Naast de stadsmuur loopt nu een drukke ringweg, en je vind hier het “Plantsoen op de Stadswal”. Hier in dit park woonden honderden jaren geleden de rijken met hun villa's. Wij genoten van een zonnige wandeling met bloemen, kunst en smalle brugjes in een groene omgeving..
