Machu Picchu magically unfolds from the summit of Waynapicchu

It is hard to believe but this is the lowest mountain top we have been on in Peru. The Waynapicchu summit is only at 2.693 meters but when the fog moves away, it becomes pure magic. We arrived at the top around 08:30am and the fog was still so thick that we didn't even know where Machu Picchu was located.

We had to wait. How long? Would the fog really disappear? Around 10:00am the fog was gone but many clouds below us were blocking the views of Machu Picchu. The clouds moved fast in all directions and the sun was fighting to break through. Sometimes it was just like the clouds were coming out of the ground.

Step by step Machu Picchu unfolded and people on the mountain cheered. After half an hour, we had clear visibility. We stayed there for an hour, looking at the amazing ruins and mountains. When you would like to do this hike, we recommend to plan it well in advance, make reservations and add a full day to your stay in Aguas Calientes.

Flowers, plants and bird encounters on our Waynapicchu hike

It is not because there was so much fog that we didn’t see anything on our hike. The plants and flowers on the walk were unique. We never saw such vegetation. While taking a rest at the summit a little bird kept us company. He came closer and closer and we gave him a bit of our cookie crumbles. Nature can be fantastic.

Hiking in the fog to the summit of Waynapicchu, the Young Mountain

After visiting Machu Picchu, we went back to Aguas Caleintes for a good night rest. The next day is expected to be intense. Exactly 400 people are allowed to climb the Waynapicchu Mountain a day, you need to make reservations months in advance. 200 people can start between 7:00 and 8:00am and 200 people can start between 10:00 and 11:00am. When you miss your time slot, you are no longer allowed in. Be on time.

We had the early starting time so we left the hotel at 5:30am. You indeed need to leave the hotel so early, going to the bus, the bus ride, the walk to the Waynapicchu entrance, it all takes more than one hour. Tens of hikers were already waiting until the gate opened. Machu Picchu in the fog was beautiful, pure nature.

The climb to the top takes about one hour and you should count the same time to make your way down. Climbing in the fog has something mystical, where are we, how far can you see, where is Machu Picchu below? Occasionally you see the shadows of mountains in the area. The closer you are to the summit the more difficult the hike gets. At the end we were wondering, isn’t this risky? One mistake and you fall more than 2.000 meters down. Concentrate on what you do, don’t think too much. Travelling without adventure is not challenging enough. Reaching the top gave us the perfect feeling. We felt like we were on top of the world.
