Brasserie des arts, Grand Place, Nivelles (Nijvel)

We don’t write that many articles about Brasseries because it is hard to find good places that are not a restaurant. Here in Nivelles it is the same, the kitchen is certainly good enough to be called a restaurant. It is also mentioned on their business card, brasserie and restaurant. On the menu you find traditional dishes like mussels, Carpaccio, steak, pastas…. They have also a black board with their specials, the suggestions of the day. I must say, we were quite surprised of the dishes on this list: scallops, filet mignon, sea bass, veal sweetbreads, and many other very good ingredients. We tried the Carpaccio from Duck with goose liver, the beef Carpaccio, the mussels, the rabbit and as specialty the jambonneau which is a very soft warm ham. The interior is basic and the staff is friendly. This is an excellent place to have a beer and something to eat.

We schrijven niet zoveel artikelen over Brasseries omdat het moeilijk is een zaak van hoge kwaliteit te vinden dat geen restaurant is. Hier in Nijvel word je geconfronteerd met een soortgelijke situatie, de keuken is zeker goed genoeg om de naam restaurant te dragen. Zowel brasserie als restaurant staan dan ook vermeld op hun zakenkaartje. Op het menu vind je klassieke gerechten zoals: mosselen, steak, Carpaccio, pasta.... Ze hebben ook een krijtbord waarop de suggesties van de Chef staan genoteerd. We waren verbaast van sommige aanbevelingen: sint-jacobsnoten, ossenhaas, zeebaars, kalfszwezerik, en andere zeer goede producten. Zelf probeerden we de Carpaccio van eend met ganzenlever, de klassieke rundscarpaccio, de mosselen, het konijn en als specialiteit de Jambonneau, een warm zacht gegaard hammetje. Het interieur is zeer simpel en het personeel is vriendelijk. Dit is een uitstekende plaats om van een biertje en gerechtje te genieten.

The Funicular Boat lift, Strepy-Thieu (Scheepslift)

The Funicular lift of Strepy-Thieu is an exceptional piece of engineering that bridges a height difference of 73,15 metres. Boats with a maximum weight of 1.350 tons are transported from the lower end of the canal to the higher level and in the other direction. It's a very impressive construction, you can visit the machine rooms and panoramic view area. The passing boats don't have to pay a fee. The lift is only used around 20 times a day and is completely funded on tax money. A very prestigious project but also a nice example of throwing away the tax payers money.

De scheepslift van Strepy-Thieu is een uitzonderlijk bouwwerk dat een hoogteverschil van 73,15 meter overbrugt. De versluisde boten hebben een maximaal gewicht van 1.350 ton. Het is een zeer indrukwekkende constructie waarbij je de machinekamer alsook de kamer met panoramisch zicht kan bezoeken. Boten kunnen gratis gebruik maken van de lift. Deze wordt slechts 20 maal per dag gebruikt en werd gebouwd met belastingsinkomsten. Een zeer prestigieus project maar ook een mooi voorbeeld van het verspillen van belastingengelden..

Grand Place et Parc de la Dodaine, Nivelles

The Grand Place in Nivelles is currently being renovated. It is a very nice market place with the town hall, the court palace, the monastery and church of Sainte-Gertrude. Next to these cultural highlights you also find here many restaurants and terraces.

When looking for some shadow on hot summer days, go for a walk in the Parc de la Dodaine very close to the Grand Place. Here you find two lakes where people enjoy fishing or just a walk on the trails alongside the flowers.

De Grand Place (Grote Markt) in Nijvel wordt momenteel gerenoveerd. Het is een zeer mooie marktplaats met het stadhuis, het justitiepaleis, het klooster en de kerk van Sint-Gertrude. Naast deze culturele hoogtepunten vind je hier ook vele restaurants en terrasjes.

Als je op zoek bent naar wat schaduw gedurende zwoele zomerdagen, kan je kiezen voor een wandeling in het Parc de la Dodaine dat nabij de grote markt gelegen is. Hier heb je twee meren waar mensen vissen of wandelen op de paden langs bloemperken.
