The small beguinage of Amsterdam with leaning houses

At the entrance gate of the beguinage you see the year 1574 carved into the wall. It shows how old this living area is, some even claim it already existed in the 14th century. The narrow white houses are leaning forward like many of the older houses in Amsterdam. They were built like that on purpose. The hook at the top of the house is used to pull items up to the higher floor and take them inside via the windows. If the house was not leaning forward the goods would hit the façade of the house.

But enough of the pulling and lifting technique. A beguinage is a community of women living together. They have an affinity with religion but they are not nuns. On the inner square next to the chapel you see a statue of a beguine in typical clothing. These women were contributing to society by helping others and remaining single during there live. This is a small beguinage but we also wrote about similar communities in Leuven and Lier. It is always fascinating to see such old living communities. Ooh, I would almost forget, a part of our wedding pictures, 11 years ago were taken in the beguinage of Leuven.

  5. Very interesting details about the Beguines. In southern Germany, there are also many old cities with Beguines houses.
