Unbelievable paintings on the ceiling of the St. Paulin cathedral in Trier

The about 300 years old St. Paulin church or Basilica in Trier has a yellow façade and is located in a green area. Next to the church you find a reasonable size cemetery. The at first simple looking church amazes you with an explosion of Baroque art as soon as you enter. At the front of the church, the altar is not approachable because it is protected by a closed gate. The gate itself is a true master piece. For us, the most beautiful part of the interior was the ceiling. The painter Christoph Thomas Scheffler did an incredible job. We can not imagine how long it took to paint all these details upside down.

De ongeveer 300 jaar oude St. Paulin kerk of basiliek in Trier is gelegen in een groen gebied in de stad. Naast de kerk vind je een redelijk groot kerkhof. Bij een eerste blik ziet de kerk er simpel uit maar van zodra je binnen gaat wordt je geconfronteerd met een explosie van Barok kunst. Aan de voorzijde van de kerk staat het altaar dat echter niet bereikbaar is door een gesloten hekwerk. Deze metalen sierpoort is een echt meesterwerk. Voor ons is het mooiste gedeelte van de kerk echter het plafond. Schilder Christoph Thomas Scheffler heeft hier zichzelf overtroffen. We kunnen ons niet inbeelden hoelang het duurt om zo’n schilderwerk te maken met zoveel details als je onderste boven moet werken..
