Taking pictures of running dogs with the Nikon 7100

As first subject to learn about my new camera, the Nikon 7100, I selected speed photography. Taking pictures of moving objects. On what am I going to practice? Well Tessa our Golden Retriever is going to help me. Kristel throws the ball into my direction and I keep on taking pictures of Tessa running by.

All running pictures are taken at a shutter speed of 1/1250sec. The first three with an exposure of f/4,5 and ISO125. However, I would like to have Tessa a lot sharper. So I tried increasing the exposure to f/8 more focus on the foreground where Tessa is running but now the picture was too dark. I continued increasing exposure up to f/13 and ISO400. The pictures are still too dark. I need more practice and do not yet succeed to put the focus only on the running dog. I also added some static pictures of Tommie and Tessa.

Proberen !

  12. Think you did pretty well here, and of course, if something is a bit dark, you can always fix it in post processing. I am sure that on the top of your camera you will have the M,A, S, and P choices. If you put the camera on S ( shutter mode), the camera will make all of the other choices for you to make the photo turn out. Practice makes perfect. Also If you are choosing to adjust the f stop, do the lowest number, and that will help your focus just be on the dog, and not the background. But first, I would just try the S mode and let the camera do the work. This looks like alot of fun for Tessa though. FOCUS ON THE DOG ONLY COMES WITH A LOW NUMBER F STOP. Also there is a mode under menu for your focus square to track the moving object, or you can just practice a panning with your camera. Lots to learn, but a a very good outcome you have gotten.
