Royal Courts of Justice or the Law Courts, London

Walking on Strand and Fleet street in London is an adventure. You discover many historical buildings, churches, luxury hotels, theatres and the enormous Law Courts. From any angle you try, it is impossible to fit the whole building in the picture, even from the other side of the street.

The monument in Victorian Gothic architecture built in the late 19th century is still in use. It looks a bit like a medieval fortress with several towers. Maybe the architects had this in mind to frighten the accused. It is a pity the facade is becoming black from the pollution of cars driving by on Strand.

The city of London did not hold back and constructed a court house with a multitude of towers, shields, statues, arches and window decorations. My visit took place during evening hours so the building was already closed. The pictures only show the exterior.

  1. Looking st these pictures, the first thought that came to my mind was "fortress", which is also your word. Also foreboding, and bleak. I would NOT want to get in trouble with the law in England!

  8. As I see it's a quite gloomy building. I agree with Ginny - like a fortress.
