Entering a U-480 Foxtrot type 641 war sub marine, Zeebrugge

It is strange to see such a black war submarine boat in a civilian port like Zeebrugge. It is no longer operational and now functions as a museum. We found it interesting to have a look at this for the crew very uncomfortable vessel which sometimes stayed under water for months. We would not enter the submarine when it would be diving.

The weapon arsenal contains 22 torpedo’s or 44 mines. The enormous steel tubes to launch torpedo's look powerful. There still needs to be place for the 75 sailors in the narrow 91 meter corridor of the vessel. Most people slept on the floor and there was only one toilet and washing bidet. Hygiene was not the strongest requirement on board. The sailors could only use water once every three days.

To move from one compartment to the next, we had to creep through narrow circular openings. A challenge if you are not used to this. In the movie "Das Boot" which is recorded on a similar submarine, you see the actors jumping through these connection holes. We were more careful. Against the walls you see many turning wheels, this is to regulate the water and air in the submarine. With the change of pressure and weight, it sinks of floats back to the surface. We can already imagine how energetic sailors had to turn these wheels.

Inside noisy compressors kept on running to provide visitors oxygen. At the end of our visit we were happy to see the blue sky and breathe in the open air. The open space outside gave us a feeling of freedom something we take for granted in our daily lives. Inside the vessel we really felt locked up, tense and uncomfortable. We are pleased we this visit but wouldn't do it again, one time is enough.

  1. I wouldn't want to hear, Fire in the hole! My father spent some time on one of these, when he was in the Navy. Great photos!

  4. I'd go crazy if I had closed here and still under water.
The crew has really been a tight squeeze. And certainly, fear has always been maintained.
    Photos are interesting and amazing.
