Restaurant 49th State Brewery, Healy

We are in this region to visit Denali National Park and our hotel is located just between Denali city and Healy. We already tried a few restaurants but this local brewery is by far the best. For diner you will have to wait a bit because it is always crowded.

They have a cozy bar and an open fire place, the service is excellent. At the back you can see the metal barrels in which they brew the beer. Alaska has a very strict legislation and minors under 21 are not allowed to drink alcohol. I am 45 years old and had to show my ID when ordering a glass of wine or beer. The waitress explained they had to be sure not to serve alcohol to underage people because the fines are very high.

We enjoyed our food and the ambiance of the restaurant. The first evening we had meat, a T-bone steak and spare ribs. The second evening we tried the lobster pasta, excellent dish but a bit too big for us. No room left for dessert this time. When you visit Denali, this is the restaurant we would recommend.

Wij zijn in deze regio om Denali National Park te bezoeken en ons hotel ligt tussen Denali Stad en Healy. Na enkele restaurants te proberen zijn we er van overtuigd dat deze lokale brouwerij het beste is. Je zal wel moeten reserveren of even wachten voor diner, het is er altijd druk.

Onze aandacht gaat naar de gezellige bar en de open haard, de bediening is uitstekend. Achterin het gebouw kan je de metalen vaten zien waarin het bier wordt gebrouwen. Alaska heeft een strenge wetgeving en minderjarigen onder de 21 mogen geen alcohol drinken. Ik ben 45 jaar oud en moest mijn paspoort laten zien bij het bestellen van een glas wijn of bier. De dienster informeerde ons dat dit een huisregel was daar de boetes voor het serveren van alcohol aan jongeren zeer hoog zijn. 

We genoten van de sfeer in het restaurant. De eerste avond aten we vlees, een T-Bone steak en ribbetjes. De tweede avond kozen we de kreeftenpasta, een zeer goed gerecht maar wat te groot voor ons. We hadden geen plaatsje meer over voor het dessert deze keer. Als je Denali bezoekt kunnen we je ten zeerste dit restaurant aanbevelen.

Posing at the “Into the Wild” bus, Healy, Alaska

This is the story of a young man called Chris McCandless, a successful university student who got tired of all the rules and society, like so many young people in the western world. He decided to leave everything behind and to travel as a backpacker. He searched for a solitary environment, a place to be one with nature. Alaska seemed to be the right location in his mind. All locals advised him not to jump into this adventure but he underestimated the danger.

On his own, he lived in a deserted bus, all alone in the wilderness. He had to collect his own food but the winter was colder and tougher than he could ever imagine. There was no food and he tried to walk back to civilization. A strong wild river kept him from returning. He starved and died in the bus.

Some tourists tried to visit the bus from the film have drowned in the same river. It is not a safe hike, always hire a guide. In the replica bus, used for movie and now located at the 49th State Brewery, we read a letter from Chris McCandless. He wrote an SOS message for the occasional hunters who stopped at the bus, I need help, I am injured and dying, currently looking for food (berries).

This story was so inspiring that the Belgian television star Tom Waes also visited this location and bus in Healy, Alaska. We enjoyed his documentary and liked his encounters with the Alaskan bears. Nothing left to do then pose in front of the bus before we enjoy a big dinner in the 49th State Brewery. A completely different position then Chris McCandless when he was looking for food.

Dit is het verhaal van een jonge man die Chris McCandless heet, een succesvolle universiteitsstudent die de regeltjes en maatschappij beu werd, net zoals bij vele westerse jongeren. Hij besloot alles echter te laten en rond te reizen met de rugzak. In zijn zoektocht naar afzondering en eenheid met de natuur, leek Alaska de ideale omgeving. Lokale bewoners adviseerden hem dit avontuur niet aan te gaan maar hij onderschatte de hardheid der natuur.

Alleen leefde hij in deze verlaten bus, eenzaam in de wildernis. Hij moest zijn eigen voedsel verzamelen en de winter was kouder en harder dan hij zich ooit kon voorstellen. Er was geen voedsel en hij probeerde terug te keren naar de civilisatie. Een sterk stromende rivier weerhield hem hiervan. Hij stierf een hongerdood in de bus.

Enkele toeristen die de bus probeerden te bereiken, na het zien van de film, verdronken in dezelfde rivier. Het is er gewoon niet veilig, huur altijd een gids. De replica bus, gebruikt in de film, staat nu aan de 49th State Brewery in Healy en we aanschouwden deze brief van Chris McCandless. Hij schreef een SOS boodschap voor toevallige jagers die soms voorbij kwamen, ik heb hulp nodig, ik ben gekwetst en stervende, momenteel ben ik op zoek naar voedsel (bessen). 

Dit verhaal was zo inspirerend dat de Belgische televisiemaker Tom Waes de bus in Healy en deze locatie heeft bezocht. We genoten van zijn documentaire en de ontmoetingen met beren. Er bleef niets anders over dan te poseren voor de bus vooraleer we genoten van het grote diner in de 49th State Brewery. Een complete andere situatie van bij Chris McCandless die wanhopig op zoek was naar voedsel.
