Day at the Port of Ponta Delgada during a transatlantic crossing

The crossing from Miami to the Azores in Portugal was great. Calm seas and sunny weather, it was however not as warm as the more southern crossing route via the Canarias. Our ship the Celebrity Equinox is docked against a sky of grey clouds. It almost rained the full morning but we still decided to visit the island.

Alongside the port you see many historical buildings. Above the houses there is a lot of smog. This is not from the pollution but low hanging clouds. There is an outdoor Olympic pool, even though it is cold, people are swimming. Some houses and walls are very colorful, sprayed with graffiti.

De trans-Atlantische overtocht van Miami naar de Azoren in Portugal was uitstekend. Kalme zee en zonnig weer, het was echter niet zo warm als op de meer zuidelijke crossing route via de Canarische Eilanden. Ons schip, de Celebrity Equinox is aangemeerd tegen een hemel van grijze wolken. Het regende bijna een volledige voormiddag maar we besloten toch het eiland te bezoeken. 

Langs de havenlijn zie je vele historische gebouwen. Boven de huizen hangt er heel wat mist, dit is niet vanwege vervuiling maar de laag hangende regenwolken. In de haven is een Olympisch zwembad, niet tegenstaande dat het zeer koud is, zijn er toch enkele zwemmers. Sommige huisjes zijn heel kleurvol door graffiti.

Sail away with the Celebrity Equinox in Lisbon

Lisbon is one of the most beautiful ports of Europe to depart with a cruise. It is late afternoon and the sun is shining. You can see it is a big vessel with about 3.000 passengers. On the top deck you can sit on the lawn, overlooking the city center. Historical buildings and hill tops are floating by. We enjoy the views with a cocktail from the pool bar. Cheers.

Lissabon is één van de mooiste vertrekhavens in Europa. Het is late namiddag en de zon schijnt volop. Je ziet dat dit een groot cruise schip is met ongeveer drieduizend passagiers. Op het bovenste dek zitten we op het gras met zicht op de stad. Historische gebouwen en heuvels drijven voorbij. We genieten van een cocktailtje uit de zwembad bar. Proost.

Industrial and fishing activities in the port of Malaga

Although Malaga is a major tourist destination, this is not really visible in the port. There were a number of sail boats but the Celebrity Equinox was the only cruise ship. From our stateroom veranda we had a beautiful view on the beach of Malagueta and the fort of Malaga.

We were surprised to see lots of industrial activity. Not only the fisher boats that deliver their catch of the day but also giant mobile container movers and liquid storage facilities. Would this be for oil, so close to the city centre? While we explore ports all over the world, we always see different infrastructure and grab every opportunity to learn something new.

Alhoewel Malaga een top toeristen bestemming is, werd ons dit niet duidelijk in de haven. Er waren wel wat zeilbootjes maar de Celebrity Equinox was het enige cruise schip. Van op het balkon van onze kajuit hadden we een prachtig zicht over het strand van Malagueta en het fort van Malaga. 

Tot onze verrassing was er heel veel industriële activiteit in de haven. Niet enkel vissers die hun dagverse vangst uitladen maar ook reuze mobiele kranen voor het behandelen van containers en opslagfaciliteiten voor grote hoeveelheden liquide producten. Zou dit voor olie kunnen zijn, zo dicht bij het stadscentrum? Terwijl we havens overal ter wereld bezoeken, zien we altijd andere infrastructuur en trachten we steeds iets bij te leren.

General Impressions of Santa Cruz and the cruise port, Tenerife

Santa Cruz in Tenerife has the main port of the island. It is already a pleasure to sail into the harbour and approach the mountains. The city is located directly on the foot of a mountain chain. It is also possible to take a speed ferry to an other Canarian island.

The Celebrity Equinox was not alone in the port. There were two other cruise ships present which would start the Atlantic crossing together with us. The middle ship is the one we cruise with. In front of it you see the Crystal Serenity from the worlds best cruise line and just behind us the Serenade of the Seas from Royal Caribbean.

Santa Cruz in Tenerife is de belangrijkste haven van het eiland. Het is reeds een plezier de haven binnen te varen richting de bergen. De stad is gelegen aan de voet van een bergketen. Het is ook mogelijk hier een speed ferry te nemen naar een ander Canarisch eiland. 

De Celebrity Equinox was niet alleen in de haven. Er waren nog twee andere cruise schepen die samen met ons de Transatlantische overtocht gingen maken. Het middelste schip, daar varen we mee. Voor ons zie je Crystal Serenity van de beste cruise rederij ter wereld en achter ons ligt de Serenade of the Seas van Royal Caribbean.
