Palazzo Vecchio with the statues of David and Hercules, Florence

When you look at the skyline of Florence you immediately see the 94 metre high tower of Palazzo Vecchio. The city hall was built in the 13th century and located on Piazza della Signoria, a fantastic square with fountains, historical buildings and statues.

At the entrance you find again like on the Piazalle Michelangelo a copy of the David statue. For almost five centuries the original statue of Michelangelo stood here in front of the city hall, now it is the museum Galleria dell'Accademia. The statue next to it is of Hercules and Cacus, it was made by Baccio Bandinelli and is not popular in Florence where it is sometimes called the sac of potatoes.

The courtyards of Palazzo Vecchio look fabulous with there decorated arches and columns. Restorations were on the way and this is really necessary. Overall this is an impressive building.

Als je naar de skyline van Florence kijkt, valt het stadhuis onmiddellijk op met zijn 94 meter hoge toren. Palazzo Vecchio werd gebouwd in de 13de eeuw en is gelegen op de Piazza della Signoria, een fantastisch plein met fonteinen, historische gebouwen en standbeelden.

Aan de ingang vind je weer een kopie van David, net zoals op de Piazalle Michelangelo. Voor bijna 5 eeuwen stond hier de originele David van Michelangelo te pronken voor het stadhuis. Nu is deze verhuist van het Galleria dell'Accademia museum. Het standbeeld naast David beeldt Hercules en Cacus uit. Het werd gemaakt door Baccio Bandinelli en is niet populair in Florence waar het soms wordt vergeleken met een zak aardappelen. 

De binnenpleinen van Palazzo Vecchio zien er ongelooflijk uit met hun gedecoreerde sierbogen en zuilen. Broodnodige restauraties waren in volle gang. In het algemeen is dit een indrukwekkend gebouw.

Spectacular views of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo

Alongside the Arno River you find a three level watch tower in front of a hill. This is the starting point of a climb to the Piazzale Michelangelo on which you discover many wild flowers. Take into account 20 minutes for the way up and down to the view point.

Once you reach the top you find yourself on a parking lot with a statue of Michelangelo’s David. This is a replica. When you are thirsty you could enjoy a drink on a beautiful terrace. Trying out a red Ferrari is also possible if you have enough money to spend but we are here for the views.

Here you have spectacular views over the Tuscan hills and Arno River. We recognise the Ponte Vecchio, Pallazo Vecchio and the Cathedral of Florence. The Piazzale Michelangelo is a free attraction not to be missed in Florence.

Aan de Arno Rivier staat een drie verdieping hoge wachttoren voor een heuvel. Dit is het startpunt voor een beklimming naar Piazzale Michelangelo waarop je onderweg vele wilde bloemen kan aanschouwen. De tocht heen en terug naar het hoogste punt duurt ongeveer 20 minuten.

Eens de top bereikt sta je op een parkeerterrein met een standbeeld van Michelangelo’s David. Dit is natuurlijk een replica. Als je dorst gekregen hebt van de beklimming is er een mooi terras beschikbaar om van een drankje te genieten. Het testen van een Ferrari ligt ook binnen de mogelijkheden als je hier genoeg geld aan wilt spenderen. Wij komen echter voor de uitzichten. 

De panoramische vergezichten over het Toscaanse platteland en de Arno zijn spectaculair. In de stad herkennen we Ponte Vecchio, Pallazo Vecchio en de Kathedraal van Florence. De Piazzale Michelangelo is een gratis attractie die je zeker niet mag overslaan.
