Barbecue in low winter temperatures at Malagueta Beach, Malaga

It was late in the afternoon and rather cold at Malagueta Beach. A piece of art on the sand displays the name of the beach. The strong wind was however ideal for the kite surfers. We also didn't mind to walk on the promenade but water sports would be a bit exaggerated for our taste.

A bit further next to a few palm trees you find restaurant and bar Chiringuito Tropicana. Several people fight the cold and even sit outside with their jacket on. From a small fisher’s boat, they made a beach barbecue. With some effort, a staff member attempts to keep it warm, ready for the first customers who want to order grilled meat or fish. During the summer this must be a perfect spot to watch the sunset while relaxing with a bottle of white wine and seafood platter.

Het was laat in de namiddag en redelijk koud op het Malagueta strand. Een kunstwerk op het zand geeft de naam van de lokatie weer. De sterke wind is ideaal voor kite surfers. Wij genoten er zelfs van tijdens onze strandwandeling maar watersport te beoefenen was voor ons toch wel wat overdreven. 

Een beetje verder naast enkele palmbomen vind je restaurant en bar Chiringuito Tropicana. Verschillende mensen trotseerden de kou en zaten op het terras met hun jas aan. Een kleine visserssloep werd omgetoverd in een barbecue. Wat met moeite hield een medewerker het vuur aan, klaar om de eerste klanten hun vis of vlees te grillen. Tijdens de zomer moet dit een perfect etablissement zijn. Wij zien ons al genieten van de zonsondergang met een flesje witte wijn en zeevruchtenschotel.

Snorkelling at the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, Kralendijk, Bonaire

Our day was really packed and in the late afternoon we felt like snorkelling. A local guide recommended us to go to the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort where for $10 you are free to use their facilities and beach chairs. This is a good tip for cruise passengers because it is only a five minute walk from the ship.

Connected to the hotel gardens you find wooden platforms leading to the sea. You need to be careful because these stairs going into the water are slippery. The water is very clear and about 3 to 5 metres deep. There are enough fish to observe, many different kinds and some are rather large, up to one meter.

Just in front of Kralendijk you see the little island of “Klein Bonaire”. A little bit further on the beach people were kite surfing.

Na een drukke dag vol activiteiten hadden we nog zin om eens te gaan snorkelen. Een lokale gids raadde ons aan naar het Divi Flamingo Beach Resort te gaan, waar je voor $10 hun faciliteiten en strandstoelen mag gebruiken. Dit is een goede tip voor cruise passagiers daar het hotel op 5 minuten wandelen van het schip ligt. 

Verbonden aan de hoteltuinen liggen houten platforms met strandstoelen. Een trap biedt u de mogelijkheid op een veilige manier de zee in te gaan. Opgelet, goed vasthouden want deze trappen zijn wel glad. Het water is kristalhelder en 3 tot 5 meter diep. Er zijn genoeg vissen te zien, verschillende soorten en sommige tot 1 meter groot. 

Net voor Kralendijk ligt een klein eiland, “Klein Bonaire” genaamd. Een beetje verder op het strand waren mensen aan het kite surfen..
