Time to snorkel at Gardner Bay, Galapagos

Arriving with the zodiac boat, we are ready to go into the shallow sea water to snorkel. First we put on our wet suit because the water is really cold. Crabs are crawling on the green slippery rocks. Time for a picture before we go into the water. There were many fish, all kinds of colors and shapes. It was however a bit blurry due to moving sand. Far below us on the ground, we see a giant ray.

Aankomend met onze zodiac boot zijn we klaar om in het ondiepe water te gaan snorkelen. Eerst gaan we echter ons wetsuit aantrekken daar het water heel koud is. De krabben kruipen op de glibberige groene rotsen. Tijd voor een foto vooraleer we in de zee gaan. Er waren allerlei soorten vissen, in vele kleuren en vormen. Het was echter wat wazig door het opborrelende zand. Diep onder ons zien we een grote platvis op de bodem.

Snorkeling at Playa Portomari, Curacao

We are still with our same taxi driver who took us from Willemstad to Jan Kok flamingo nesting where she waited for us. Now the driver drops us at Playa Portomari where we are going to snorkel for about an hour. The driver also waits here and when we are ready she will bring us back to the cruise ship. In Curacao, it is easy to arrange your own trip with a taxi driver, an important tip for cruise passengers.

We brought our own snorkel gear but it could also be rented on the beach. Before going into the water we have a drink at the bar (nonalcoholic off course). From a wooden platform snorkelers and divers can directly access the water. The water was rather sandy but we saw some nice fish.

We zijn nog steeds op weg met dezelfde taxi chauffeur die ons van Willemstad naar de Jan Kok flamingo's bracht en daar wachtte. Nu rijden we naar Playa Portomari waar we een uurtje gaan snorkelen. De chauffeur wacht ook hier en brengt ons daarna terug naar het cruiseschip. In Curaçao kan je eenvoudig je eigen trip organiseren met een taxi, belangrijke tip en informatie voor cruise passagiers. 

We hadden onze eigen snorkel mee maar je kan deze ook huren op het strand. Vooraleer we in het water gingen dronken we nog een niet alcoholisch drankje aan de bar. Van op het houten platform kunnen snorkelaars en duikers op simpele en veilige wijze het water is. Er was heel wat zand in het water maar we zagen toch enkele mooie vissen.

Snorkeling with Sea Lions on Floreana Island, Galapagos

Snorkeling was part of our daily Galapagos program. Here in Floreana we were lucky to encounter young Sea Lions in the water. At first a bit scary because these play devils swim around and under you. Being spooked and putting your head above water, they surface and look straight in your eyes.

It was a big adventure but not without risks. A large male Sea Lion would not tolerate you, the little ones just have fun. The naturalist warned us, if you see a big one, swim back to the beach. Hard to do this when the Sea Lion swims hundreds times faster than you.

Tijdens onze Galapagos reis stond snorkelen op het dagelijkse programma. Hier in Floreana hadden we veel geluk zeeleeuwen te ontmoeten. Eerst een beetje angstaanjagend want die speelduivels zwemmen rakelings langs en onder u. Ze doen je schrikken en als je je hoofd boven water steekt, kijken ze recht in je ogen. 

Het was een groot avontuur maar niet volledig risicovrij. Een grote mannetjes zeeleeuw zou je niet in de buurt verdragen, de kleintjes maken gewoon plezier. De naturalisten hadden ons gewaarschuwd, als je een grote zeeleeuw in het water ziet, zwem dan onmiddellijk terug naar het strand. Dit zou niet gemakkelijk zijn daar een zeeleeuw honderden maal sneller zwemt dan een mens.

What is the best beach of Aruba? Arachi Beach near the California lighthouse

There are of course different opinions, but Arachi Beach is considered the best non commercial beach of Aruba. The beach is located at the most northern point of the island and can easily be reached by bus from the cruise port. From the beach you have great views on the dunes and the California lighthouse. Don’t worry about the time, the bus stops right at Arachi Beach and also directly in front of the cruise ships. The trip takes about 40 minutes and every hour you have a bus in both directions. The fare of $2 per person is extremely cheap. This is an ideal situation and you can decide yourself if you want to stay one hour or longer. It was fun to sea a man swim with his dog.

We wanted to make the most of the day and we arrived very early. The morning clouds were still present and the beach was empty. The sea water was very clear and warm. This location is normally the best place in Aruba to snorkel but if there are too many waves or current it is not without risks. You have to swim out of the beach to the left in the direction of the rock formations and then come back the same way. You need to be an experienced swimmer or wear a life jacket. You could sea many sailing boats dropping snorkelers on the same location but from the beach you have to be brave or wear protection.

Er zijn natuurlijk verschillende meningen maar Arachi Beach staat bovenaan de lijst als beste niet commerciële strand van Aruba. Het strand is gelegen op het meest noordelijke punt van het eiland maar kan gemakkelijk worden bereikt per bus van aan de cruise haven. Op Arachi Beach heb je een mooi zicht over de duinen en de California vuurtoren. Geen probleem voor cruise passagiers met de uur regelingen, de bus stopt aan het strand en vlak voor de cruise haven. De rit duurt ongeveer 40 minuten en je hebt een bus ieder uur in beide richtingen. Het tarief van 2$ per persoon is zeer goedkoop. Een ideale situatie en je kan zelf beslissen hoe lang je daar blijft. Het was leuk een man te zien zwemmen samen met zijn hond. 

Wij wilden het meeste van de dag maken en kwamen heel vroeg aan. De ochtendwolken waren nog aanwezig en het strand was verlaten. Het zeewater was helder blauw en warm. Dit is normaal de beste plaats van Aruba om te snorkelen maar er waren te veel golven en stroming om zo’n afstanden zonder risico’s te kunnen zwemmen. Voor de beste locatie dien je de zee in te zwemmen, dan naar links en naar de rotsformaties toe. Terug zwemmen doe je in omgekeerde richting. Je moet een ervaren zwemmer in goede conditie zijn of een zwemvest dragen. We zagen dat vele boten snorkellaars in het water lieten op deze locatie maar om dit te bereiken via het strand moet je moedig zijn of bescherming dragen..
