Careful not to trip over sea lions on Gardner Bay, Galapagos

Pictures say more than a thousand words so we will keep it short. Gardner Bay beach is a crowded place full of sun catchers. This time no slim ladies in miniscule bikinis but mainly lazy sea lions. They lay in the sun and don’t even open their eyes when you pass by. Some of them chase each other on the sand and others play in the water. Be cautious when taking pictures and walking around, you could trip over a sea lion. Remember they are a lot stronger and have longer teeth than you.

Foto’s zeggen meer als duizend woorden dus houden we het kort. Gardner Bay is heel populair en vol met zonnekloppers. Deze keer zijn het echter geen slanke dames in minuscule bikini’s maar hoofdzakelijk luie zeeleeuwen. Ze liggen in de zon en kijken niet eens op als je dicht voorbij wandelt. Enkelen jagen op elkaar in het zand, anderen spelen in het water. Wees voorzichtig bij het nemen van foto’s en wandelen, je zou kunnen struikelen over een zeeleeuw. Onthoudt dat zij sterker zijn en langere tanden hebben als jij.

Amazing views on South Plaza Island, Galapagos

For us was this one of the most amazing walks on the Galapagos. On our way, we went through a landscape of grey shiny rocks enriched by large cactus trees. We saw several animals never seen before: a special gull, yellow finches and a fabulous yellow grey land iguana.

The views from the top of South Plaza Island cliffs are amazing. The sea water is blue and white from the breaking waves. Looking down, we see a Blue Footed Boobie, time to screw up the tele-lens. Before leaving we ask a friend to take our picture, a memory we will keep forever.

Voor ons was dit één van de meest memorabele wandelingen op de Galapagos eilanden. Onderweg South Plaza Island gingen we door een grijs schijnend rotslandschap verrijkt met grote cactusbomen. We zagen er vele voor ons nieuwe diersoorten zoals unieke meeuwen, gele vinken en een ongelooflijke landhagedis. 

De zichten van op de rotsen waren verbluffend. Het zeewater was blauw en wit omwille van de brekende golven. Onder ons zagen we een Blue Footed Boobie, tijd om de telelens op te schroeven. Net voor het verlaten van het eiland vragen we een vriend nog een foto van ons twee te nemen, een herinnering voor het leven.

Sea lions and Sally Lightfoot Crab on Punta Suarez, Galapagos

Espanola Island is full of crab. Every rock above water level is a playground for crab. Some just sit there, others challenge each other to a fight. The Sally Lightfoot Crab with all its colors is fantastic. On the beach and in the water, sea lions play. After the activities, it is time for a nap in the sun. Have you ever seen such a sweet sea lion?

Espanola Island heeft een grote populatie krabben. Iedere rots boven de waterlijn is een speeltuin voor krabben. Sommigen zitten er gewoon, andere dagen elkaar uit voor een gevecht met hun scharen. De Sally Lightfoot Crab met al zijn kleuren is fantastisch. Op het strand en in de zee, spelen de zeeleeuwen. Na hun activiteiten is het tijd voor een dutje in de zon. Heb je al ooit zo'n schattige zeeleeuw gezien?

General Impressions of the city of Santa Cruz, Galapagos

We end our Santa Cruz series with the only populated area we visited during our whole trip on the Galapagos Islands. We never saw other humans, besides members of our group, except in this city. It is the capital of the Galapagos Islands but still a small town.

At the fish market, a sea lion and pelicans were begging for leftovers from the cleaned fish. The fisher gladly gave it to them. This are large pets to have. A bit further, a sea lion is taking a nap on a bench. Be careful not to sit on it, his dark colored skin is not easy to spot on the dark bench. We conclude that the wildlife is welcomed by the citizens of Santa Cruz.

We eindigen onze Santa Cruz reeks met het enige bewoond gebied dat we hebben bezocht tijdens onze Galapagos reis. Anders zagen we geen enkel persoon, buiten de leden van onze groep. Dit is de hoofdstad van de Galapagos maar toch nog heel klein. 

Op de vismarkt zagen we een zeeleeuw en pelikanen bedelen voor visafval. De vissers gaven dit maar al te graag. Het zijn wel heel grote huisdieren om rond je te hebben. Een beetje verder ligt een zeeleeuw op een zitbank. Hij was niet goed te zien met zijn donkere vacht op het bruine hout. We kunnen enkel concluderen dat wilde dieren hier goed samenleven met de lokale bevolking.
