General Impressions of the city of Santa Cruz, Galapagos

We end our Santa Cruz series with the only populated area we visited during our whole trip on the Galapagos Islands. We never saw other humans, besides members of our group, except in this city. It is the capital of the Galapagos Islands but still a small town.

At the fish market, a sea lion and pelicans were begging for leftovers from the cleaned fish. The fisher gladly gave it to them. This are large pets to have. A bit further, a sea lion is taking a nap on a bench. Be careful not to sit on it, his dark colored skin is not easy to spot on the dark bench. We conclude that the wildlife is welcomed by the citizens of Santa Cruz.

We eindigen onze Santa Cruz reeks met het enige bewoond gebied dat we hebben bezocht tijdens onze Galapagos reis. Anders zagen we geen enkel persoon, buiten de leden van onze groep. Dit is de hoofdstad van de Galapagos maar toch nog heel klein. 

Op de vismarkt zagen we een zeeleeuw en pelikanen bedelen voor visafval. De vissers gaven dit maar al te graag. Het zijn wel heel grote huisdieren om rond je te hebben. Een beetje verder ligt een zeeleeuw op een zitbank. Hij was niet goed te zien met zijn donkere vacht op het bruine hout. We kunnen enkel concluderen dat wilde dieren hier goed samenleven met de lokale bevolking.

Pelicans and Flamingos on Floreana Island, Galapagos

There are so many different kind of birds on the Galapagos Islands but in this article, we are going to focus on the pelicans and flamingos. The pelican sitting on the rocks is one of our better and favorites bird pictures ever. Another pelican was doing acrobatics in the shallow water.

In the middle of a lake we could see tens of flamingos. A bit far but still possible to take pictures. Flamigos keep on fascinating us, before this trip we only saw them in the Caribbean.

Er zijn ongelooflijk veel vogelsoorten op de Galapagos eilanden maar in dit artikel gaan we ons voornamelijk richten op pelikanen en flamingo’s. De pelikaan op de rotsen is één van onze betere en favoriete vogelfoto’s ooit. Een andere pelikaan deed aan wateracrobatie. 

In het midden van een meer konden we flamingo’s zien. Een beetje ver maar toch nog mogelijk om foto’s te trekken. Flamingo’s blijven ons fascineren maar tot nu toe hadden we ze enkel gezien op de Caribische eilanden.

Herons and pelicans at Bocagrande Beach, Cartagena

The wind blows hard on the beach of Bocagrande but it stays burning hot. Be very careful not to get sun burn even though it is above 40 degrees you don't feel hot. Palm trees lean a bit in the direction of the wind. From the moment you are on the beach, people try to sell you products and services: shells, food, wooden carvings and massages. Never go with someone into an unknown area for a massage. You will get into problems.

A white heron flies low over the waves and on a ship wreck rest a group of pelicans. These are big birds and ready to steal your food. Fishermen have to fight them not to lose their catch. Some families try out the wild sea, in the background you see the dome of the Old City. We are one of the few tourists on the impressive Bocagrande Beach.

De wind waait hard op het strand van Bocagrande en het is er nog steeds broeiend heet. Pas heel goed op dat je hier geen zonnebrand oploopt, met zelfs temperaturen boven de 40 graden voelt het niet heet aan. Palmbomen buigen en leunen mee in de windrichting. Van zodra je het strand betreedt proberen venters u producten en diensten aan te smeren: schelpen, eten, houten beeldjes en massages. Ga nooit met iemand naar een onbekende plaats mee voor een massage, je komt gegarandeerd in de problemen. 

Een witte reiger vliegt laag over de golven en op een scheepswrak zit een groep pelikanen. Dit zijn grote zeevogels die klaar staan je eten te stelen. Vissers vechten met hen om hun visvangst niet te verliezen. Sommige families spelen in het wilde water, op de achtergrond zie je de koepels van de Oude Stad. Wij zijn één van de weinige toeristen op het indrukwekkende strand van Bocagrande.

Cruising on the extremely hot Gatun Lake, Panama

It’s hard to remember when it was last so hot. The temperature on the sun deck must be above 40 degrees and we cool down with still ice water and wine. The enormous Gatun Lake is totally flat, sometimes green but most of the time brown due to the turning mud from vessels passing by. Don’t under estimate the traffic on this lake, big size cargo ships are crossing us frequently.

Again we see many pelicans in the sky but also doing fly-by’s just above the water line. The trees and mountains make it so beautiful and some of the high tree top blossom. You can hear the wildlife: birds, monkeys and insects. At the end of the lake ships are waiting to cross the Gatun Locks.

Het is moeilijk te herinneren wanneer het voor het laatst zo heet was. De thermometer geeft meer als 40 graden aan en wij zoeken verkoeling met ijswater en een glaasje wijn. Het enorme Gatun Meer is volledig vlak, soms is het water groen maar meestal bruin door de voorbij varende schepen. Onderschat het zee verkeer niet op dit meer, grote schepen varen ons regelmatig voorbij. 

Terug zien we veel pelikanen in de lucht maar ook juist boven de waterlijn. De bomen en de bergen maken het allemaal mooi, sommige boomtoppen staan in bloei. Je kan de natuur horen: de vogels, apen en insecten. Aan het einde van het meer wachten vele schepen om de Gatun Sluizen in te varen.
