The small church of Saint Nicholas, Catvat

Catvat is a small beach side village with a big heritage. One of these 500 year old buildings is the Saint Nicholas church. The only thing we know is that it was built in Baroque architecture.

The church is small with nice colourful statues. The altar looks as it is made of gold. Next to the main church hall, you find a classroom type of area. A modern painting containing several portraits is very impressive.

Catvat is een kleine vissersdorpje of strandlocatie met veel erfgoed. Een 500 jaar oud gebouw is de Sint Nicolaas kerk. We weten er enkel van dat het werk rechtgezet werd in Barok stijl. 

De kerk is klein en bevat verschillende kleurrijke beelden. Het altaar lijkt van goud gemaakt. Naast het schip van de kerk, vind je een soort klaslokaal. Hier hangt een indrukwekkend modern schilderij dat in feite een compilatie van portretten is..

Serbian Orthodox Saint Nicholas church in Kotor

This is a very young church built in 1909 and on the second floor hangs a Serbian flag. It shows the close link between Serbia and Montenegro. Just above the entrance you see a marvellous mosaic. Inside the church there are many frescos. The silverware is impressive ranging from small and large candle holders to enormous chandeliers.

The most amazing piece of art is the altar wall at the back of the church. It is dark brown with super paintings. Normally, we like bright colourful paintings but these darker versions are absolutely stunning. At the church there were several women with children begging. It looks like a poor region. We just had to give something to these people.

Dit is een zeer jonge kerk gebouwd in 1909 en op het tweede verdiep hangt een soort Servische vlag. Het toont de nauwe banden tussen Servië en Montenegro aan. Juist boven het inkomportaal zie je een prachtige mozaïek. Binnen in de kerk vind je vele fresco’s. Het zilverwerk is indrukwekkend en varieert van kleine en grote kandelaars tot enorme sierlusters. 

Het meest ongelooflijke kunstwerk is de altaarmuur aan de achterkant van de kerk. Deze is donker bruin met zeer mooie schilderwerken. Normaal houden we meer van schilderijen met meer licht en kleur maar deze matte versies zijn ook echt verbazingwekkend. Bij de kerk waren er enkele vrouwen met kinderen aan het bedelen. Het lijkt een arme regio. We moesten toch wel iets geven aan deze mensen..

The Saint Nicholas church Amsterdam: stained glass art work

The Saint Nicholas church also called Cathedral at the IJ, is located near the Central Station of Amsterdam. The exterior as well the interior is a bit dark and the church looks rather old. This is however not the case, the church is only about 130 years old. Inside you find a beautiful mosaic of the Last Supper and the stained windows are fantastic. If I am not mistaken, the item under the altar has a small dome in the colours of Amsterdam.

De Sint Nicolaas kerk in Amsterdam wordt ook wel de Kathedraal aan het IJ genoemd en is gelegen nabij het Centraal Station. De buitenzijde alsook het interieur zijn wat donker en de kerk lijkt heel oud. Dit is echter niet zo, ze is slechts ongeveer 130 jaar oud. Binnen vind je een mooie mozaïek van Het Laatste Avondmaal en de brandglasramen zijn fantastisch. Als ik me niet vergis, is de kleine koepel van het kunstwerk onder het altaar in de kleuren van de stad Amsterdam..
