Stiftskirche and Benedictines monastery on the Nonnberg, Salzburg

This monastery for women, overlooking the old city of Salzburg exists already more than 1200 years, the church with its red clock tower is now a 1000 years old. On our walk we approach the church via a hill, it was a real climb to the top of the Nonnberg on this sunny day. The arched entrance of the church is richly decorated and on both sides of the door there are two small statues. In the crown of one of the saints, there was a bird nest. The letters on the wall reads PAX or peace. The sisters leave the birds in peace or it could also refer to a last resting place because there is a small cemetery around the church.

Dit vrouwenklooster dat over het oude stadsgedeelte van Salzburg uitkijkt bestaat reeds meer als 1200 jaar, de kerk met zijn rode kloktoren is iets jonger maar toch al 1000 jaar oud. Op onze wandeling langs het heuvelpad zien de we de Stiftskerk reeds liggen. Het is een zware klim op deze zonnige dag. Het booggewelf van de inkom is rijkelijk versierd, aan beide kanten van het portaal hangen twee kleine standbeelden. In de kroon van de heilige zit een vogelnest. De letters tegen de muur lezen PAX of vrede. De nonnen laten het vogeltje blijven en in vrede. Het zou ook kunnen dat PAX refereert naar de laatste rustplaats want er is een klein kerkhof langs de kerk..
