European air traffic crisis, the return trip via coach

After two cancelled flights we were forced to look for a solution to get back to The Netherlands. Our new flight was expected to leave more than a week later with no guarantees it would really take off. Hotel prices were increasing rapidly and we had to be at work. Trains were striking in France which made it more difficult. All ferries from Spain to the UK were also fully booked.

Renting a car to drive internationaly was too expensive, now more than 1.000 Euros a day. Car rental companies really took advantage of the whole air traffic ban to make enormous profits. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and we hope the European commission will investigate the business and ethical aspects of car rental companies during this crisis.

How did we come back than? We were able to buy three coach tickets from Barcelona to The Hague for a 24 hour drive. The only additional problem was that we were in Madrid, approximately 650 km from Barcelona. Fortunately, we could rent a car for local use to go to Barcelona. This was also a drive of 7 hours. The cost to rent this car was increased three times: from the reservation price (80 euro), to a pick up price (160 euro), to end at a drop off price of 280 Euro. We are happy to be back even if this has cost us an additional 1.300 Euros.

Na twee geannuleerde vluchten, waren we verplicht te zoeken naar een andere oplossing om in Nederland te geraken. Onze herboekte vlucht vertrok pas een week later met geen enkele garantie dat deze effectief zou opstijgen. De prijs voor een hotelkamer steeg dag na dag en we moesten op het werk zijn. De treinen in Frankrijk waren in staking wat alles nog moeilijker maakte. Alle overzetboten naar Engeland waren ook volledig volgeboekt.

Het huren van een auto voor internationaal gebruik was te duur, meer dan 1.000 Euro per dag. Auto verhuur bedrijven hebben echt misbruik gemaakt van het vliegverbod om enorme winsten te maken. Deze handelswijze dient te worden onderzocht door de Europese Commissie. Gestrande passagiers worden gewoon misbruikt door de auto verhuur bedrijven tijdens deze crisis.

Hoe zijn we dan teruggekeerd? We hebben drie buskaartjes kunnen bemachtigen van Barcelona naar Den Haag, een rit van 24 uur. Het enige overblijvende probleem was dat we ons nog 650km van Barcelona bevonden. Gelukkig hebben we een auto kunnen huren voor nationaal gebruik. De rit naar Barcelona nam 7 uur in beslag. De kost voor het huren van deze wagen werd drie maal verhoogt: bij reservering (80 Euro), bij ophalen van de wagen (160 Euro) en bij het terugbrengen moesten we 280 Euro betalen. We zijn blij terug in Nederland te zijn niettegenstaande dat ons dit een extra 1.300 Euro heeft gekost.
