Westminster Abbey in London, probably the most expensive church in the world

Westminster Abbey is a Gothic cathedral in London built during the 13th century. It is one of the churches in the world that made it to the UNESCO World Heritage list and this is well deserved. Many people know this church from the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. All men who watched the wedding will also remember Kate’s sister Pippa, she just looked wonderful.

Let’s go back to the church. From the front it has a bit the same style as the Notre Dame in Paris. Only one of the clock towers has a working clock and the details and cleanness of the saints above the main entrance are unbelievable. However, if you look at the other parts of the building, you see that the walls are blackened from pollution but the totality of the building is still fantastic.

We have visited about 150 churches in the world but never we had to pay ₤18 (28$ or 21€) per person to enter a church. I would have paid it but on top of that there was a big sign that you could not even take pictures inside. In my opinion this is just scandalous and I decided not to enter. London is expensive but this is a bridge (church) too far.

  3. I agree that is just too expensive - I did not realise that they charged now. All of the churches in Spain we visited charged too, but not that much.

  4. i have never paid to enter a church either. if the money is put toward the upkeep, perhaps it is fair. i don't really know as i am not a "church" person!!

it is gorgeous from the outside, your images captured it beautifully!!

  5. YIKES!!! SO interesting to me!! Churches are supposed to be open to all! And what about on Sunday mornings, I guess during services they let anyone wonder in. I should hope so!! I love the black and gold turret, and the round window. Your outdoor photography has made up for not going inside, it is FINE. I have a particular dislike of places that you have to pay to go in, then NO pictures!!! Your money should entitle you to pictures. The church is asked to go into the world and bring others in, that is what the bible tells us, and what our church does. Our church serves as a shelter in the winter for the homeless and we also have a 12 step recovery program every week. This church seems to be doing the opposite, I guess they think they are more high and mighty and above it all.

  6. Beautiful church, but really very expensive. I've never heard to pay so much for entrance to the church. Scandal!

  7. Seems wrong to me too...charging...But I guess I haven't heard their reason. Price is high too. Then again some of the larger churches in the US are charging to use the church for a wedding.....even if you are a member.

  8. Lovely Church, but a fee to enter!! I thought the house of God was free to enter whenever one chooses to. Having said that, here in Tasmania, Australia I know of a few Churches of different denominations that have their doors locked due to vandals who have no respect, but then there is usually someone about to let you in. To pay is a 'sin' in my book!
