Westminster Abbey in London, probably the most expensive church in the world

Westminster Abbey is a Gothic cathedral in London built during the 13th century. It is one of the churches in the world that made it to the UNESCO World Heritage list and this is well deserved. Many people know this church from the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. All men who watched the wedding will also remember Kate’s sister Pippa, she just looked wonderful.

Let’s go back to the church. From the front it has a bit the same style as the Notre Dame in Paris. Only one of the clock towers has a working clock and the details and cleanness of the saints above the main entrance are unbelievable. However, if you look at the other parts of the building, you see that the walls are blackened from pollution but the totality of the building is still fantastic.

We have visited about 150 churches in the world but never we had to pay ₤18 (28$ or 21€) per person to enter a church. I would have paid it but on top of that there was a big sign that you could not even take pictures inside. In my opinion this is just scandalous and I decided not to enter. London is expensive but this is a bridge (church) too far.

Westminster Abbey is een gotische kathedraal in hartje Londen die werd gebouw gedurende de 13de eeuw. Het is één van de weinige kerken in de wereld die het hebben gehaald op de UNESCO Werelderfgoed lijst en dat is echt verdiend. Vele mensen kennen deze kerk van het huwelijk van Prins William en Kate Middleton. Ook de mannen die het huwelijk hebben gevolgd herinneren zich zeker Kate’s zus Pippa die er fantastisch uit zag. 

Maar laat ons terug gaan naar de kerk. Het vooraanzicht lijkt een beetje op de gevel van de Notre Dame in Parijs. Slechts één van de torens heeft een werkende klok en de details van de heiligen boven het inkomportaal zijn verbluffend. Als je echter kijkt naar andere delen van de kerk zie je zwarte vervuiling van smog en uitlaatgassen. De totaliteit van het gebouw blijft gewoon fantastisch. 

We hebben reeds 150 kerken in de wereld bezocht maar nog nooit heeft men ons een inkomprijs van ₤18 (28$ of 21€) per persoon gevraagd. Ik ging het nog overwegen dit te betalen maar een groot bord vermeldde dat je niet eens foto’s mocht nemen in de kerk. Dit vond ik gewoon schandalig en besloot niet binnen te gaan. Londen is duur maar dit is toch een brug (kerk) te ver..

Bright light enters St. Hedwig Cathedral via the dome oculus, Berlin

The Saint Hedwig Cathedral in Berlin looks a bit like a temple with a circular hall behind it. Comparable to the Pantheon in Rome but a lot smaller. This church is only 250 years old but one of the most important churches of the city. After the Second World War, the St. Hedwig Cathedral had to be restored.

That’s why the interior is very modern. The stained glass windows are grey with only a few soft colours in it, the opposite of what we normally discover in churches. The floor and altar on the lower level are in black marble. Just like in the Pantheon, the oculus or the dome opening let’s the bright sun light into the middle of the church. I really like my picture of the string of lamps together with the dome opening.

De Sint Hedwig kathedraal in Berlijn lijkt op een tempel met daarachter een cirkelvormige hal. Vergelijkbaar met het Pantheon in Rome, alleen veel kleiner. De kerk is pas 250 jaar oud maar toch één van de belangrijkste religieuze gebouwen van de stad. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog diende te kerk zware restoraties te ondergaan. 

Dit is ook de reden waarom het interieur modern is. Het grijze brandglas met licht getinte kleuren is net het tegenovergestelde van het normale te verwachten kleurenspel in een kerk. De vloer alsook het altaar op de kelderverdieping zijn van zwart marmer. Juist als in het Pantheon schijnt de felle zonlicht door de oculus, of de koepelopening, recht naar beneden in de kerk. De foto van de ketting met lampen onder de oculus maakt mij echt tevreden..

The Alexander Nevski cathedral, the face of Tallinn

For many tourists, the Alexander Nevski cathedral is the face of Tallinn, one of the main attractions. It was completed at the turn of the century in the year 1900, so it is a very young church. This Russian Orthodox Church is located in front of the Estonian parliament on Palace Square. The domes make it so special for southern European people, we seldom see such an architectural style. The Estonian people decided to demolish the church which was remembering them of the Russian domination of their country before independence. Luckily they didn’t go ahead with this intension, the Alexander Nevski cathedral is a unique church.

Voor vele toeristen is de Alexander Nevski kathedraal het gezicht van Tallinn, één van de grote bezienswaardigheden. De bouw werd voltooid op de eeuwwisseling in het jaar 1900, dus het is een zeer jonge kerk. Deze Russisch Orthodoxe kerk is gelegen voor het Estse parlement op Palace Square. De koepels maken het heel speciaal voor bezoekers uit zuidelijkere Europese landen, waar deze architectuur bijna niet voorkomt. De Esten besloten de kerk te slopen daar deze hen herinnerde aan de Russische onderdrukking voor ze onafhankelijke werden. Gelukkig hebben ze deze intentie niet doorgevoerd want de Alexander Nevski kathedraal heeft een unieke architectuur..

The Cathedral of our Lady, Antwerp - OLV Kathedraal, Antwerpen

You have a nice view on the cathedral from the "Groenplaats" and the "Main Square". The constructions started during the 16th century and the city continued working on it. Inside you find a choir from the year 1415 and several paintings from Peter Paul Rubens. Among these are the two famous triptych paintings: "The Raising of the Cross" and "The Descent of the Cross". It is a pity you have to pay 5 euro entrance, but it is worth it. The cathedral is very beautiful and the paintings are priceless.

Je hebt een mooi zicht op de kathedraal van de Groenplaats en de grote markt. De bouw werd gestart in de 16de eeuw en de stad heeft voortdurend hieraan verder gewerkt. In de kathedraal vind je een houten koor van het jaar 1415 en verschillende schilderijen van Peter Paul Rubens, waaronder de beroemde drieluik schilderijen: de "Kruisoprichting"en de "Kruisafneming". Het is spijtig dat de inkom betalend is (5 euro), maar het is het zeker waard. De kathedraal is zeer mooi en de schilderijen van onschatbare waarde.
