A perfect meeting point in the heart of London, Trafalgar Square

London is a major metropole with a population of almost 8 million. The city centre is crowded and people in classic grey, bleu and black clothing are in a hurry. Trafalgar Square is an open place where people come together, it is a central location and on a hot sunny day you can cool down at one of the fountains. Youngsters hang out here, wearing extreme cloths, schools come by learning about the English history, and I am passing by daily to go to the Trafalgar hotel for a management course.

In the middle of the Square you find a column with the statue of Lord Nelson, he is surrounded by four lions. Lord Nelson defeated Napoleon in the battle of Trafalgar. History is strange because Napoleon was also beaten in Waterloo, Belgium. How many times is it possible to beat one of the most powerful generals in world history?

For me, Trafalgar Square is so impressive because it is an open space where people can relax while looking at architectural treasures surrounding it: the church of St. Martin in the Fields, the National Gallery and many historical buildings. I enjoy looking at the people who cross the square, the ones who pose with the lions or sit on benches close to the fountains, everyone is different.

This most be one of the best places to use as a meeting point, it is the centre of London, you find here many monuments and it is has a rich history; the people are fascinating to watch.

Londen is een grootstad met bijna 8 miljoen inwoners. Het centrum is druk en mensen in klassieke zwarte, grijze en blauwe kledij lopen haastig door de straten. Trafalgar Square is een open plaats waar mensen afspreken, het is centraal gelegen en op een warme dag kan je afkoelen aan een van de fonteinen. Jongeren in hippe kledij hangen hier rond, scholen bezoeken het om geschiedkundige redenen en ik wandel hier dagelijks voorbij naar het Trafalgar Hotel waar ik een management cursus volg.

In het midden van het plein zie je de zuil met standbeeld van Lord Nelson die Napoleon versloeg in de slag van Trafalgar. De zuil is omringt door vier leeuwen. De geschiedenis kan raar zijn daar Napoleon ook werd verslagen in Waterloo in België. Hoe is het mogelijk dat Napoleon, een van de machtigste generaals in de geschiedenis verschillende keren werd verslagen?

Voor mij is Trafalgar Square zo indrukwekkend daar het een open ruimte is waar mensen kunnen ontspannen terwijl ze de architecturale schatten aanschouwen: de kerk van St. Martin in the Fields, de National Gallery en vele mooie klassieke gebouwen. Ik geniet van de mensen die het plein over wandelen, diegenen die poseren met de leeuwen of op de banken zitten bij de fonteinen, iedereen is verschillend. 

Dit moet wel een van de meest optimale plaatsen zijn om met kennissen af te spreken, het is centraal gelegen, er zijn vele monumenten, het heeft een rijke geschiedenis en het is leuk voorbijgangers te observeren..

Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens in the National Gallery, Prague

Finding the Flemish Primitives in Prague was a surprise. The fantastic National Gallery palace on the Hradčany Square dates from the 16th century and was built in rococo architecture. The inside of the building is not so spectacular but it holds a permanent exhibition of paintings. Sometimes the light in the building and the focus on the paintings was not so good but still worth a visit. In this article I am showing some pictures of the building and also of paintings from Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. 

Het aantreffen van de Vlaamse Primitieven in Praag was een verrassing. Het fantastische paleis van de Nationale Galerij op het Hradčanyplein dateert uit de 16de eeuw en werd gebouwd in de Rococo stijl. Het interieur van het gebouw is niet zo spectaculair maar het bevat een permanente collectie van meester schilderwerken. Soms is de belichting in het gebouw van mindere kwaliteit wat de werken niet altijd ten goede komt. In dit artikel tonen we wat foto’s van het paleis en schilderwerken van Rembrandt en Peter Paul Rubens..
