Classical music on the famous San Marco Square in Venice

On all the pictures I have seen of the San Marco Square, my attention was drawn to the clock towers called Campanile. This is however not the only clock tower on the square, a bit hidden between other historical buildings you find an arched clock tower with blue elements. We like the colour combinations, the winged lion and the enormous bell on top of the roof.

The St. Marco cathedral was under restoration so no opportunity to take overview pictures here. The square however is gigantic. In the middle of the square there was a terrace with a classical music orchestra. Probably this type of music scenes can only be found in Italy. The country of romance.

In general a this square is a top tourist magnet and with reason. It is a collection of architectural treasures, statues, towers, the cathedral, shops and don’t forget photo moments with pigeons.

Op alle foto’s die ik ooit heb gezien van het San Marcoplein ging mijn aandacht immer uit naar de Campanile kloktoren. Dat is echter niet de enige op het plein, een beetje verborgen tussen historische gebouwen vind je een geboogwelfde galerij met een blauw gedecoreerde kloktoren. We houden van de kleurencombinatie, de gevleugelde leeuw en de enorme klok boven op het dak.

De Sint Marco kathedraal werd gerestoreerd dus konden we hiervan geen overzicht foto’s maken. Het plein is echter gigantisch. In het midden stond een terras waar er klassieke muziek werd gespeeld. Waarschijnlijk is zoiets enkel mogelijk in een romantisch land als Italië. 

In het algemeen is dit plein een toeristenmagneet en met reden. Het is een verzameling van architecturale schatten, standbeelden, torens, de kathedraal, winkels en niet te vergeten, foto momenten met de vele duiven.

General impressions of Venice, a maze in the water

Venice is a beautiful city that every traveller needs to see once in his life. Most streets are so narrow that it is difficult to orientate yourself. However hard you try, when you leave the wide streets, you will get lost. Make sure you have enough time to find you way back.

The city is surrounded by water and streets connected by small bridges. Just throw yourselves into the adventure of walking in these narrow alleys and see where you will end up. Most houses in the city centre are pieces of art.

Venice has a lot to offer: shopping, museums, churches, concerts, boat trips and historical buildings. There is one big disadvantage; tourists are not allowed to take pictures in any church or museum.

Venetië is een prachtige stad dat iedereen die van reizen houdt moet bezocht hebben. De meeste straten zijn zo smal dat het heel moeilijk is u te oriënteren. Hoe hard je ook probeert, eens je de hoofdwegen verlaat, zal je verloren lopen. Hou hier rekening mee zodat je genoeg tijd hebt om je weg terug te vinden.

De stad is omgeven met water en straten verbonden door kleine bruggetjes. Gooi je zelf in een avontuur, ontdek de smalle steegjes en zie waar je uit komt. De meeste huizen in het stadscentrum zijn kunstwerken. 

Venetië heeft heel veel te bieden: winkelen, musea, kerken, concerten, boottochten en historische gebouwen. Er is een groot nadeel, toeristen mogen nergens in musea of kerken foto's trekken.

Cruising into and out of Venice with the Celebrity Equinox

Venice is a strange place with all these canals and particularly the main water way that flows through the city. Giant cargo vessels and cruise ships make their way to the port together with a pilot and pass by all the Venice attractions. To be able to dock, our ship had to make a sharp turn. It was supported by a small tug boat that turned us in the right direction.

When we were in Venice with the Celebrity Equinox, other cruise ships like the Norwegian Jade, the MSC Divina, the Ruby Princess and a Royal Caribbean ship joined us. Venice is one of the main European ports and brings high volume tourists to the area. For some cruise companies this is even a departure port so that passengers can stay multiple days.

Sailing into and out of Venice is an adventure. Standing on the 15th deck it feels like you are higher than the Campanile tower of San Marco Square. On the canal you see gondolas going up and down because of the water displacement of these big vessels. It was a bit cloudy with some rain but we still enjoyed the Venice sail off.

Venetië is een rare stad met al zijn kanalen en in het bijzonder zijn hoofdwaterweg die door de stad vloeit. Grote vrachtvaartuigen en cruise schepen zijn op weg naar de haven onder begeleiding van loodsen. Ze varen langs alle bezienswaardigheden van Venetië. Om aan te meren moest ons schip een scherpe bocht maken. We werden ondersteund door een sleepboot die ons in de juiste richting trok.

Die dag was de Celebrity Equinox niet alleen in de haven, andere cruise schepen zoals de Norwegian Jade, de MSC Divina, de Ruby Princess en een Royal Caribbean schip waren ook van de partij. Venetië is een van de meest populaire havens van Europa en zorgt voor een grote toevoer van toeristen. Sommige cruise rederijen gebruiken Venetië als vertrekhaven waardoor passagiers verschillende dagen kunnen blijven. 

Het binnenvaren en het vertrek zijn een echt avontuur. Op het 15de dek toren je boven de stad uit en het voelt alsof de hoger bent dan de Campanile toren op het San Marcoplein. Ver beneden ons op het grote kanaal zie je de gondola's op en neer gaan vanwege de water verplaatsing. Het was wel wat bewolkt met een klein beetje regen maar we genoten van het uitvaren.
