Exploring nature and spotting Flamingo’s in Washikemba, Bonaire

We board an open jeep to explore nature in Bonaire. From the capital Kralendijk, we make our way to the area of Guatemala which is covered by giant cactuses. Everywhere little gecko’s are jumping away. The lagoon at Washikemba is connected to the sea and here you mostly find flamingo groups. We were lucky to see them feed in the shallow waters. They get there pink colour by eating little shrimp and they search hard while keeping their heads under water. On one of the pictures you see a black and white flamingo, it is still young. Colourful tropical birds sit in trees or eat fruits from cactus plants. A green chameleon was not afraid but carefully looked in our directions when I took a picture.

  2. What a lovely catch you caught in action on the cactus, while the bird searches for necture from the plant! Such a lovely place, I'm used to seeing this in Arizona, some parts of Nevada and California as well! You sure are gathering quite a find of various things all around!

  8. Flamingoes are beautiful birds - if you see them from a distance.
Close to them they're quite stinking and their cry is terrible and false.
Very nice photos and interesting info - thanks for sharing.
Merry Christmas to both of you!
    Greetings, Miklos
