Hurricane Ivan destroys the churches of St. George’s, Grenada

Nine years have past since hurricane Ivan ran over the island of Grenada and left his path of destruction. This must be our most unique church visits ever, the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Anglican Church are now open air places. The roof and most walls have been blown away. It is hard to imagine the forces of such a hurricane.

In the Presbyterian Church we meet someone from the village who explains that both church towers are still standing because they were protected by God himself. They are the heart of the church and step by step the population is going to rebuild these monuments. We see similar destructions on other islands but not as severe as here in St. George’s.

In the Anglican Church we are standing in the middle ship which is flooded by rain water. The stained glass windows are still in a reasonable state, a strange site. In the open chapel at the side of the church they still perform celebrations.

Schrijnend.

  18. What tragedy! Hurricane Ivan showed its wrath in 2004, and it’s sad to know that these wonderful churches are still in ruins because of it. But I’m amazed with the stained glass - it’s still in good shape even if everything surrounding it has already been damaged. Anyway, I hope the churches, if still possible, will be rebuilt soon.
