A boat trip to Rumelihisari fortress on the Bosphorus, Istanbul

It was in the morning and still cold on the windy Bosphorus. There was also some fog. It is better to take such a boat trip in the morning because later in the day, the boats are overloaded with tourists.

The Rumelihisari fortress dates from the 15th century and was built by Sultan Mehmet II. From the fortress the sultan had control of all vessels heading to the Black Sea. Next to the fortress you see the Faith Sultan Mehmet Bridge, a modern piece of architecture from this time period.

High profile but low customer satisfaction, restaurant Ulus 29, Istanbul

Restaurant Ulus 29 in Istanbul seems to be all about marketing. It is located at the Ulus park hilltops and the views of the bridges crossing the Bosphorus are breathtaking. We assume this is what you pay for.

From the old city centre of Istanbul to the restaurant is a distance of 10km and the taxi took about 1,5 hours to get there. Traffic was completely blocked like so many evenings in Istanbul. Arriving at the restaurant, staff was haughty and tried to seat us at a table on the terrace while it was extremely cold outside. Even with a small heating above you, it is not pleasant to dine outside in a temperature of less than 10 degrees. We had to refuse 4 times before they took us to a table inside the restaurant.

All tables were extremely close to each other, the waiters could hardly serve you. When they serve the table next to you, they almost sit on our table. Overall, the service was very poor, they forgot to refill the wine, while you were eating they started changing the meat knifes, it was a complete joke.

The plates we selected were of decent quality standards but were presented in a very old fashioned style. Prices were extremely high, some of the plates on the menu were around 100 euro a piece. For this quality and style an absolute disgrace. This is probably why they do not publish their menu and prices on their website. Once you are in the restaurant, the customer is trapped. The wine card was even more expensive.

After the diner, we got the wrong check, than they took the check away again and stamped it that no service was included. The only good things about Ulus 29 are the views. We recommend you never to go there, it is a first class tourist trap.

Where to buy tickets for a boat trip on the Bosphorus, Istanbul?

A boat trip on the Bosphorus is something you have to do when you are in Istanbul. It is however very popular so we recommend taking the boat as early as possible in the morning when it is not too crowded. You can buy tickets all over the city. At the main attractions of Istanbul, local sales men approach you with leaflets and so called promotion prices. We recommend you to buy your tickets directly at the Galata Bridge on the Eminönü Square. This is also one of the locations where the boats depart. It could be about half the price.

We selected “Tur Yol” as boat company and they charge 15 Turkish Lira (about 7 euro) for a 1,5 hour trip. We assure you this is long enough. The river cruise takes you up to the second Bosphorus Bridge and back to your departing point. The most important sites you see during the trip are: Galata Tower, New Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Cirağan Palace or the Kempinsky Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, Rumeli Fortress, Kuleli Military School, Beylerbeyi Palace and Maiden’s Tower. A lot to see in a relaxing cruise.

By the way, did you know that Istanbul is also a major Sea Cruise port? When we were there we saw the MSC Lirica, a ship from Pullman, from Costa, from the German company Mein Schiff and one from Aida. The Bosphorus is the crossing point from the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea and Istanbul is the only city in the world than is split over two continents, Europe and Asia.
