General Impressions of Girona

Girona is a city in the north east of Spain. River banks in the center are spectacular with colorful house facades. On the water, youngsters are holding a raft race. Everyone has decorated their raft and people are cheering on the competitors from pedestrian bridges above.

We were the most impressed with local markets. Here you find a lot of different cheeses and fine meats. One merchant was making his bread in a mobile oven on the spot. We tried some of the local delicatessens and tapas. It is always nice to discover a new place.

Girona is een stad in het noordoosten van Spanje. De oevers in de binnenstad zijn spectaculair met hun gekleurde gevels. Op het water houden jongeren een race met drijvend vlotten. Iedereen heeft zijn vaartuig gedecoreerd en toeschouwers juichen de deelnemers aan van op de hoger gelegen voetgangersbruggen. 

We waren het meeste onder de indruk van de lokale markten. Hier vind je vele kazen en fijne vleeswaren. Een handelaar bakte ter plaatse vers brood in een mobiele oven. We probeerden enkele delicatessen en tapas. Het is altijd leuk een nieuwe plaats te ontdekken.

Discovering the origin of Tapas during wine tasting in Barcelona

We were on a wine tour and received some tapas with the wine. Our tour guide and wine expert asked us if we new the origin of tapas? Not being aware, he started explaining.

The King of Spain visited a castle and was offered a glass of wine. To ensure no flies would enter the glass, the wine producer covered the glass with a slice of ham. Before tasting the wine the King had to remove the ham, eat it and drunk the wine. So, the original tapas were for free and used to cover the opening of a wine glass.

Today tapas are sold in bars and restaurants, they are no longer free and they do not cover glasses anymore. The pictures below show the Iberian Ham and a glass of liquor covered by a tapa. We took the first picture in Arenas de Barcelona, the second one was taken in restaurant 41 degrees.

We waren op een wijnexcursie en kregen tapas bij onze wijn. Onze gids en wijnexpert vroeg of we het ontstaan van de tapa kenden? Niet op de hoogte zijnde, begon hij zijn verhaal.

De Koning van Spanje bezocht een kasteel en kreeg een glas wijn aangeboden. Om er zeker van te zijn dat er geen vliegjes in het glas terecht kwamen, werd het glas afgedekt met een snee ham. Vooraleer te proeven diende de Koning de ham te verwijderen, at deze op en proefde de wijn. Hiermee zijn de tapas ontstaan, ze waren gratis bij wijn en bedekten de opening van het glas. 

Vandaag zijn tapas niet langer gratis en worden verkocht in restaurants en bars. Bijna nooit worden tapas op een glas geserveerd. De foto's hieronder tonen een hambar in Arenas de Barcelona en een tapa op likeurglas in restaurant 41 graden.

Party and shopping paradise of Salou

Salou is the number 1 Catalan beach location for everyone who likes to party. The first pictures show the entrance of disco Pacha where the DJ Tïesto occasionally entertains the crowd.

During the day you can go shopping, take a tourist train, sleep, go to an amusement park or just relax and have fun with your friends on the beach. For the evenings and nights you find an enormous selection of bars and disco's. A dream holiday for all teenagers. Unfortunately we are already too old for most of this stuff.

We had to be in the region so we stopped to check-out this party centre. We have to admit they also had nice shops and beach bars. On one of the terraces we stayed the whole afternoon trying out tapas with wine. What a top day in the sun.

Salou is de nummer 1 badplaats in Catalonië voor de party fanaten. De eerste foto's tonen de ingang van discotheek Pacha waar DJ Tïesto af en toe de bezoekers animeert.

Tijdens de dag kan je er shoppen, een toeristen treintje nemen, slapen, naar een pretpark gaan of gewoon plezier maken met vrienden op het strand. Als de avond valt gaan een overvloed aan disco's en bars open. Een droomvakantie voor alle jongeren. Spijtig genoeg zijn wij reeds te oud voor deze onzin. 

We waren in de regio dus stopten we in Salou om deze uitgangsstad eens nader te bekijken. We moeten bekennen dat er leuke winkels en strandbars zijn. Op één van de terrasjes bleven we de hele middag tapas en wijn proeven. Wat een top dag in de zon.

Where can you find the best tapas in Barcelona? Restaurant Tickets.

The famous Adria brothers have a few restaurants in Barcelona and one of them is called Tickets. They serve small tasters in tapas form like you find many restaurants and bars in Spain but this is not an ordinary place. The owner was the Chef of restaurant El Bulli, the world first ranked restaurant. It is not surprising that this tapas restaurant Tickets already received a Michelin Star.

We were just passing by and had reservations in Restaurant 41 degrees of the same owner. We could not resist giving you an impression of Tickets. The lady who welcomed the guests, inquired if we were interested in the restaurant. The answer was yes. She gave us a business card to make reservations but mentioned at the same time that they were already fully booked for 10 weeks. If you would really like to try the best tapas of Barcelona, plan it a long time in advance. Good luck and enjoy.

De beroemde Adria broers hebben enkele restaurants in Barcelona en één van deze heet Tickets. Men serveert er kleine tapas, de Spaanse proeverijtjes, die je in vele restaurants en bars overal in Spanje vindt. Dit is echter geen gewone tapas bar. De eigenaar was ook de Chef van het restaurant El Bulli, het nummer 1 restaurant ter wereld. Het is dan ook niet verrassend dat Tickets al zijn eerste Michelin Ster heeft binnen gehaald. 

We kwamen er gewoon voorbij en hadden gereserveerd in restaurant 41 graden van dezelfde eigenaar. We moesten toch enkele foto’s nemen en u een indruk geven van restaurant Tickets. Het vrouwtje aan de ingang vroeg ons of we interesse hadden in het restaurant? Ja was het antwoord. Ze gaf ons een zakenkaartje en vermelde dat ze reeds 10 weken waren volgeboekt. Als je de beste Tapas van Barcelona wil proberen, plan het dan een lange tijd vooraf. Veel geluk en smakelijk.

Restaurants in Madrid

The most popular food in Spain is Paella and tapas. Almost 90% of all restaurants only serve this. In our opinion the quality of these dishes is good to very good but after a few meals, you want something else. In our quest for other meals, we tried a grill restaurant and an Italian restaurant. Both these restaurants were far too expensive and the food was terrible. We can only recommend you to stay with the tapas. Unfortenately, smoking is allowed in all restaurants.

De meest populaire schotels in Spanje zijn Paella en tapas. Ongeveer 90% van alle restaurants serveren enkel dit. Naar onze mening is de kwaliteit van deze schotels goed tot zeer goed, maar na een tijdje wil je toch ook iets anders. In onze zoektocht naar andere gerechten, hebben we een grill restaurant en een Italiaans restaurant geprobeerd. Beide restaurants waren veel te duur en de kwaliteit van het eten was afschuwelijk. We kunnen enkel aanraden, blijf bij de tapas. Spijtig genoeg is roken toegelaten in alle restaurants.
