The church of our Lady with its Belfry in Tongeren

This church received a special status from the Pope and is now a Basilica. It was built in the Gothic style and opened in 1240. Three hundred years later the 64 metres high Belfry was added to the church. On the top of the tower you see the Belgian flag blowing in the wind. The Basilica is listed on the world heritage list of UNESCO. Inside the church you find beautiful sculptures, large windows with stained glass and paintings. What is more unique is the golden eagle holding a bible just behind the altar. On the left side there is a special altar with flowers for Our Lady. There is also a possibility to go into the garden, walking via an arched gallery.

De kerk heeft een speciale status gekregen van de Paus en is nu een Basiliek. Deze werd gebouwd in de gotische stijl en opende in 1240. Driehonderd jaar later werd het Belfort tegen de kerk aangebouwd. Op de top van de toren zie je de Belgische vlag wapperen. De Basiliek is opgenomen op de werelderfgoed lijst van UNESCO. Binnen in de kerk vind je mooie beeldhouwwerken, hoge ramen met brandglas en schilderijen. Wat ons meer uniek leek was een gouden adelaar die de bijbel draagt, deze staat achter het altaar. Aan de linker voorzijde van de kerk staat een ere altaar met bloemstukken voor Onze Lieve Vrouwe Maria. Er is ook een mogelijkheid via een gang met booggewelven de binnentuin te bezoeken..

Fantastic scampis in garlic sauce at Brasserie “De Kiezel”, Aarschot

“De Kiezel” is a brasserie - restaurant on the Diestsesteenweg 491 in Aarschot. Here we like to eat something when we are driving by in this region. At was a while ago because we no longer have dance classes in the “Lado” in Langdorp which is close by. This restaurant uses wooden elements to give it a warm interior. The chandeliers in combination with wall paintings make it a unique place for a budget restaurant. As starter, Kristel had the croquettes from Nord Sea shrimps and I selected the scampi’s in garlic sauce. The scampi dish was fabulous: the sauce contained small piece of garlic, tomatoes, leek, spices and a bit of salad. This was served together with fresh bread. As main course we had the home made Lasagne which was also good. A place we can recommend for lunch.

“De Kiezel” is een brasserie - restaurant op de Diestsesteenweg 491 te Aarschot. Wij houden er wel van hier iets te eten wanneer we in deze buurt rondrijden. Het was nu wel een tijdje geleden daar we geen dansles meer hebben in de “Lado” te Langdorp, dat hier dichtbij gelegen is. Het restaurant met zijn houten elementen heeft een warm interieur. De kroonlusters in combinatie met muurschilderingen maken dit een unieke horeca zaak voor een restaurant in deze budget klasse. Als voorgerecht, had Kristel de kroketten van Noordzee garnalen en ik de scampi’s in lookboter saus. De scampi schotel was gewoon fantastisch: het bevatte kleine stukjes look, tomaatjes, prei, kruiden en een beetje salade. Dit werd opgediend met vers brood. Als hoofdschotel namen we de huisgemaakte Lasagne en deze was ook goed. Zeker een brasserie die we kunnen aanbevelen voor de lunch..

Save the Saint-Lucas church in Munich, with events

From the top floor of my hotel, I took the first picture of the Saint-Lucas church in Munich. I had already seen the church from one of the offices I was working in. After talking to a local colleague, he informed me that this beautiful Lutheran church from the late 19th century was in a rather poor state and the city of Munich even considered closing the church and removing it. This would be a real pity. The church is located in the Steindorfstrasse on the banks of the Isar River. When entering the church, I was positively surprised of the condition the church was in, I expected the worst. The altar and the dome were just amazing. The church organises events to collect funds for the renovation works, in December you have two Christmas Gospel concerts (10-11/12), two classical concerts with music from Johann Sebastian Bach (17/12) and a Sylvester event (31/12). If you would like to visit the Saint Lucas Church you need to go early, it closes late afternoon.

Van op de bovenste verdieping van mijn hotel heb ik de eerste foto van de Sint Lukas kerk in München genomen. Ik had de kerk reeds gezien op van op een kantoor waar ik soms werk. Een lokale collega informeerde mij dat deze laat 19de eeuwse kerk in slechte staat was en dat de stad reeds had overwogen ze te sluiten en af te breken. Dat zou echt zonde zijn. De kerk is gelegen in de Steindorfstrasse aan de oever van de Isar rivier. Toen ik de kerk binnenging was ik positief verbaast over de staat van de kerk, ik had eerlijk gezegd het ergste verwacht. Het altaar en de koepel waren ongelooflijk. De kerk organiseert evenementen om fondsen te verzamelen voor renovatiewerken, in december zijn er twee gospel concerten (10-11/12), twee klassieke concerten met muziek van Johann Sebastian Bach (17/12) en een Nieuwjaarsconcert (31/12). Als je de kerk wilt bezoeken raad ik je aan vroeg te komen, ze sluit haar deuren namelijk in de late namiddag..

Spectacular Blue Spa sky bar of the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich

The Bayerischer Hof is a 170 year old; five star hotel that has won many prestigious awards, it is know for the stylish Falk’s Bar located in their mirror hall constructed in 1839 and has a Michelin star restaurant. The Falk’s is a bar I certainly want to have a drink at in the future. A colleague, who knew the hotel took me up to the Blue Spa Bar and Lounge. She said this was the best because it is located at the top floor of the luxurious hotel with excellent views of Munich city centre. Arriving there, I could not believe it was so good. The views of the Frauenkirche and the city hall at the Marienplatz were just spectacular. It was too cold to sit outside and after taking a few photos; we enjoyed a glass of wine and some tea in the Blue spa top bar. They served the drinks with a bowl of dried fruit. I didn’t bring my swim gear, but there was also a swimming pool. It is a fabulous hotel but too expensive for my wallet to book a room. By the way, this was the hotel Michael Jackson always stayed in when he was in Munich.

Het Bayerischer Hof is een 170 jaar oud, 5 sterren hotel in München. Het heeft verschillende prestigieuze prijzen gewonnen en is zeer bekend om zijn stijlvolle Falk’s Bar met spiegelzaal gebouwd in het jaar 1839, hier willen we toch ooit eens iets gaan drinken. Het hotel heeft ook een restaurant met 1 Michelin ster. Een collega die het hotel reeds kende nam me mee naar de Blue Spa Bar en lounge. Volgens haar was dit de beste bar voor het uitstekende zicht over de binnenstad van München. Toen we er binnengingen kon ik mijn ogen niet geloven, zo goed was het. Het zicht op de Frauenkirche en het stadhuis op de Marienplatz zijn gewoon spectaculair. Het was te koud om buiten te zitten en na het nemen van een paar foto’s besloten we binnen een glas wijn en thee te drinken. Het werd geserveerd met een schaaltje gedroogd fruit. Er was ook een zwembad, maar ik had mijn zwembroek spijtig genoeg niet bij. Het hotel ziet er fantastisch uit maar toch wat te duur voor mijn portemonnee. Wist je trouwens dat Michael Jackson altijd hier logeerde wanneer hij in München was..

The Old Harbour (Oude Haven) of Rotterdam and The White House

The Old Harbour of Rotterdam is a place where old freight ships have there last resting place. An old lighthouse between the boats doesn’t look like it is at the right position. With the expansion of the city, the skyscrapers moved in and the views of historic vessels together with tall buildings displaying giant advertisements is a world from a different dimension. Modern tourist speed boats make the time leap even bigger. The White House is known in Washington DC but also in Rotterdam. This historic building was once the highest office tower in Europe. It survived the bombing during the Second World War and is now a hotel listed as a protected building by the UNESCO. You can even stay in it because it is now a hotel. Historic and modern Rotterdam melt together.

De Oude Haven van Rotterdam is een plaats waar oude vrachtschepen hun laatste rustplaats hebben. De oude vuurtoren tussen de boten lijkt hier niet op de juiste positie. Met de uitbreiding van de stad, winnen de wolkenkrabbers terrein. De oude vaartuigen samen in één beeld met hoge reclame panelen dragende gebouwen lijkt wel uit een andere dimensie. Moderne speedboten maken deze sprong in de tijd nog groter. Het “Witte Huis” van Washington DC. is beroemd, maar ook in Rotterdam. Dit historisch pand was het hoogste kantoorgebouw van Europa. Het overleefde de bombardementen gedurende de Tweede Wereld Oorlog en is nu een beschermd monument op de UNESCO lijst. Je kan er zelfs in logeren want het is nu een hotel. Historisch en modern Rotterdam smelten samen..

Modern buildings of Rotterdam and the new Market Hall

Modern buildings in a trendy city. That is for sure, Rotterdam with its skyscrapers and special shaped houses is probably the most eccentric major city in The Netherlands. You find here yellow cube houses, skyscrapers around the harbour in front of a classic bridge, a metro station in the shape of an UFO, a library with tubes hanging out, offices with glass walls, and many more… Sometimes you wonder how it is possible that classic elements are combined so well with modern architecture. The next spectacular project of the city of Rotterdam is the new Market Hall which is supposed to be completed in 2014. This is the last picture of the article coming from a brochure; this building is still under construction.

Moderne gebouwen in een trendy stad. Dat is een zekerheid, Rotterdam met zijn wolkenkrabbers en speciale huizen is waarschijnlijk de meest excentrieke Nederlandse grootstad. Je vind hier gele kubushuizen, torenhoge gebouwen rond het havengebied met in de voorgrond een klassieke brug, een metro station in de vorm van een UFO, een bibliotheek waar de buizen aan de buitenkant van het gebouw hangen, kantoren met glazen muren, en veel meer.... Hoe is het mogelijk dat al deze moderne en klassieke elementen in de stad zo goed met elkaar te combineren zijn? Is dit top architecturale planning of is het ook wat geluk? Het volgende spectaculaire project van de stad is de nieuwe Markthal die men zal voltooien in 2014. Dit is de laatste foto in dit artikel, deze komt uit een brochure, de Markthal wordt nog steeds gebouwd..
