The Saint Stephansdom, the main cathedral of Austria in the capital Vienna

The Stephansdom located on the Stephansplatz is currently under renovation. The exterior of this enormous church is rather strange, it has a tower of 137 meter high at the back of the building and on the left side a low tower of half that height. It looks like the tower was never completed. We don’t know why, but it could be like with many other churches that the foundation was not strong enough on that side to carry the weight of an equal size tower as on the south. This is a typical architectural mistake for many churches all over the world. What we particularly like about the exterior is the design of the roof with small windows, and coloured mosaics. The walls, arches, and towers of this Gothic church are heavily decorated with stone carvings and statues.

The interior is rather dark with super high ceilings. Columns are fully covered with statues and there are some nice wall paintings. The area around the organ is amazing. At a small altar, there was a picture of Mother Teresa and it was exactly the same photo as we saw in the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Israël. If you are in Vienna you need to visit this cathedral.

De Stephansdom is gelegen op de Stephansplatz in Wenen en wordt op dit moment gerenoveerd. De buitenkant van deze kerk is enorm en ook raar, ze heeft een toren van 137 meter hoogte aan de achterkant en aan de linkerzijde een toren op halve hoogte. De toren werd nooit afgewerkt. We weten niet waarom maar kunnen het vermoeden. Dit is een veel voorkomende architecturale fout in de fundering of sterkte van de ondergrond die zo’n zware toren niet kan dragen. Het dak met de kleurvolle mozaïeken en kleine vensters, viel sterk in de smaak. Muren, bogen en torens van deze Gotische kerk zijn zeer zwaar gedecoreerd met beeldhouwwerken.

Het interieur is redelijk donker met zeer hoge gewelven. Zuilen zijn zwaar versierd met standbeelden en er zijn enkele mooi schilderwerken. Het deel rond het orgel is ongelooflijk mooi. Op een klein altaar stond een foto van Moeder Teresa en wat een toeval, we zagen identiek dezelfde foto in de Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Israël. Als je Wenen bezoekt mag je zeker deze kathedraal niet overslaan..
