NADB Ballroom Dance competition, Wijchen Swingt Internationaal

We haven’t danced a competition in three months. After a series of poor results, we decided to have a break from competitions, lessons and practise. We enjoyed our long holiday in Florida and the Caribbean. Three weeks ago we slowly picked up our training sessions and decided to see the Wijchen competition as practise and fun.

We arrived rather early in Wijchen because we had to go through our routines, an extensive warm-up and get used to the adrenaline of competitions again. Our first round was just not good enough, the redance round was a lot better and we enjoyed the competition again. For the fourth time in a row, we didn’t make it into the semi-final and this shows it is over and out.

We decided to retire from adult dance competitions but will continue dancing for one day a week. In October we will intensify training again to start in the BDSF and WDSF Senior 1 competition classes. We will try to attend the Dutch Championship NK to see most adults dance again and say hello to many couples we will no longer meet on the competition floor. This is a hard decision but an unfortunate truth, I am getting older and with the age of 43, too old for the adults.

  5. A well deserved break anyway it sounds like from all that you have accomplished so far. Who knows what the future holds, right. I don't know that much about the dance world and the age groups and such, but I would never say 43 is old! Oh heavens no! Especially for as great a shape as you both are. I work with folks that are much younger than 43 and they are (well you know what you saw in Florida) far too many young folks that are way out of shape and over weight. I know if you love dance you will continue it runs through your blood- even when one dances with no one watching within your own living room! Enjoy your week. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely vacation photos too, they sure made my day each time I opened one of your posts!

  9. I am so sorry to hear this! This is such a beautiful picture. How is it that you can enter a senior competition? Here, you must be in your fifties or sixties. Could you enter a regular competition and just register for the lower grade of dancers? But I know you have both discussed this a lot and done what is best fr both of you.

  10. Still you both look WONDERFUL. I am sure that you will follow your hearts and better to go out feeling good about the decision than to have something horrible happen. You can tell you both love doing it, so continue doing it at a venue and pace you both enjoy! :)

  12. What a stunning photo. I can't believe you're "too old" at 43! However, entering Senior Competitions will be fun, too. I know the dancing is physically grueling. I've loved watching your videos and am glad you'll keep enjoying the dance once a week.

  13. Sorry to hear that you have opted for retirement from the dance world. You and kristel look so lovely dancing together, but am sure that as you get toward Middle age it is harder to keep up with young competition. Keep dancing for fun, and perhaps you will find, once again, a perfect niche. Don't feel old though, as you are a long ways away from that... Believe Me! Speaking from experience here.

  14. That is a shame that you are giving up competition, but you will have lots of lovely memories and photographs to remind you.

  17. You're not too old in 43 age for dancing, it is a shame if you stop your competitions.
You have now good time to practise and wait untill you both are 45 ages, and then the pparquet of senior 2 -class is sure yours. (But Kristel is so young, she has still a long time to wait :)
The new enthusiasm for the competition may still emerge. You both dance so well and beautifully.
    Lovely photo.

  24. Ballroom Dancing describes partner dances, performed socially or competitively, with prescribed specific movements. It evokes a way of air and magnificence if performed socially and of energy and keenness once performed competitively.
