Airboat trip on a river of grass, Everglades National Park

In our last Everglades article, we are taking you back four years in time. It was 2009 when we did this adrenaline boosting boat trip in search of alligators and wildlife. It was during the dry season and alligators were even swimming towards you when the boat was floating.

It was a great adventure and these swamps seem to have lanes through which airboats pass. A little bit like one way streets. In some cases the water stood so low that the airboat just glided over the sand or mod and than you start prauing not to get stuck. Our guide was very friendly and had a good eye for spotting birds. After our trip we saw a giant yellow grassshopper sitting at the side of the road. Have you ever seen such a beautifull creature?

  5. Looks as if you had an amazing ride on this airboat. Wonder what kind of interesting bird that is. I really enjoyed the airboat ride that i did, and the group we went with had an alligator along in the boat ( a small one) . He was named elvis, and each of us got to hold him. This is an area that I would definitely not want to be in if my boat sank. But very fascinating.

  12. It would have been a delight to have a close view of the birds, but not so keen on being too close to the alligators! The grasshopper is very distinctly marked and coloured.

  13. I have heard of these airboat trips and seen them on T.V. You are both brave! I love that sweet little white flower, and the bird with the yellow legs and yellow and red beak. But the grasshopper...so intricate, almost looks like a mechanical robot or something.
