General Impressions of St. Kitts, a tropical paradise in the Caribbean

To be honest we had never heard of this island which is part of the country “Saint Kitts and Nevis”. The island is very small and has about 40.000 inhabitants. About half of them live in the capital Basseterre. This is also the port where we arrived together with the Royal Clipper.

We hired a private guide who drove us around the island. Suddenly I saw lots of empty bottles hanging in a tree. Stop the car! Has this got a special meaning? No, it is just men drinking and showing off. But let’s get serious now, you see these two white carvings in the rocks, they are called Petroglyphs and are about 4500 years old. These are witnesses that in those days people were already living on this tropical island. We were impressed with the beauty of bays, flowers, butterflies and nature in general.

  8. beautiful seascapes and colours, like the butterflies too...about the petroglyphs, they looks a little bit refreshed with nt so old paint right? I have seen similar in Guadeloupe, few islands south, but they dont use white paint as the original carvings are still well seen;

  10. I am one day going to make a grouping of bottles or something like that in a tree, possibly a bit more lovely kind of bottle, and put twinkle lights in them! Yes- just after I set off on a quick sail of that fine craft you posted here! Ha! Ha!

  11. the legend of the bottle trees as i have learned it is you hang the bottles near your home. bad spirits get trapped in the bottles and are destroyed by the morning sun. :)
